The Charters Towers Region is a local government area in North Queensland, Australia southwest of, and inland from the city of Townsville, based in Charters Towers. Established in 2008, it was preceded by two previous local government areas which dated back to the 1870s. It has an estimated operating budget of A$27.5 m. History ''Gugu Badhun'' (also known as ''Koko-Badun'' and ''Kokopatun'') is an Australian Aboriginal language of North Queensland. The language region includes areas within the local government area of Charters Towers Region, particularly the localities of Greenvale and the Valley of Lagoons, and in the Upper Burdekin River area and in Abergowrie. Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland, Australia. The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) is established under the ''Electoral Act 1992'' as an independent statutory authority, responsible for the impartial conduct of state and local government elections in Queensland. The Shire of Dalrymple was a local government area located in North Queensland, Australia, and surrounded but did not include the town of Charters Towers, at which its council and administrative centre was based. It covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1879 until 2008, when it amalgamated with the separate City of Charters Towers to form the Charters Towers Region. History Dalrymple Division was created on 11 November 1879 as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 4494. The name ''Dalrymple'' is believed to honour George Elphinstone Dalrymple, an early explorer of the region. Upper Burdekin River
The Burdekin River is a river located in North and Far North Queensland, Australia. The river rises on the northern slopes of Boulder Mountain at Valley of Lagoons, part of the western slope of the Seaview Range, and flows into the Coral Sea at Upstart Bay over to the southeast of the source, with a catchment area of approximately .
