Town Of Charters Towers
The City of Charters Towers was a local government area in North Queensland, Australia, consisting of the centre and suburbs of the town of Charters Towers. Established in 1877, it was entirely surrounded by the Shire of Dalrymple, with which it amalgamated in 2008 to form the Charters Towers Region. History The Borough of Charters Towers was proclaimed on 21 June 1877 under the ''Municipal Institutions Act 1864''. It achieved a measure of autonomy in 1878 with the enactment of the ''Local Government Act''. With the passage of the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'', the Borough of Charters Towers became the Town of Charters Towers on 31 March 1903. On 13 April 1909, Charters Towers was proclaimed a City. A separate Shire of Queenton was excised from the surrounding Dalrymple Division on 2 July 1902 and merged with the City of Charters Towers on 23 December 1916. Edward Miles
Edward Thomas (Teddy) Miles (1849–1944) was born in Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) and during his lifetime served as a merchant seaman, a Free Trade Party Member of the Tasmanian Parliament and Minister and as an entrepreneur. Miles is the grandfather of John Miles, Liberal Party Member of the Legislative Council of Victoria for Templestowe Province from 1985-92. Miles worked on ships trading with India, China and South Africa, and after 1879 commanded a series of ships trading the Tasmanian East Coast. He was elected to the Tasmanian lower house of Parliament, the House of Assembly, in December 1893 for the Electoral district of Glamorgan and held that electorate until 1899. In 1900 he successfully contested the Electoral district of Hobart, but resigned after a matter of weeks to pursue business interests. Thomas Johnson (21 December 1819 – 3 November 1894) was a politician in the British colony of South Australia. Early life He was born in Thirsk, Yorkshire, and served an apprenticeship as a currier, then acted as a leather merchant in Bermondsey, London. He emigrated to South Australia on the Dutch ship ''Fopsmit'', arriving in August 1853; fellow passengers were W. H. Sharland (1828 – 29 July 1911), Joseph Grundy and William Townsend. Commercial interests Johnson and Townsend opened a boot and shoe shop in Rundle Street, then a retail premises in King William Street next to the Gresham Hotel, with his "Pantheon" boot and shoe factory opposite. He later moved to premises on North Terrace. In 1883 he sold the business to Corris, Craig & Co. and retired from commercial life.
