Charles Cowles (art Dealer)
Charles Cowles (born 1941) is an American art dealer and a collector of contemporary art. Cowles was also a curator of Fine Art at the Seattle Art Museum from 1975 until 1979. He opened his contemporary art gallery at 420 West Broadway in SoHo in lower Manhattan in 1979, mounting the first public exhibition there in April 1980. The Charles Cowles Gallery was finally located on 537 West 24th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues in Chelsea in New York City. In June 2009, after thirty years as an art dealer, Cowles closed his contemporary art gallery and retired. Cowles was the publisher of ''Artforum'' magazine from the mid-1960s until the early-1980s. He graduated from Stanford University in the early-1960s and originally operated the magazine in 1965 from Los Angeles, California. By 1967, he moved ''Artforum'' to Manhattan. Dennis Ashbaugh
Dennis John Ashbaugh (born 1946 in Red Oak, Iowa) is an American painter and artist who lives and works in New York City. He was the first artist to employ DNA marking patterns in paintings, in his 1992 work Designer Gene. Ashbaugh's use of light and color in his large scale paintings of autoradiographs have drawn comparison to Mark Rothko. Early life Ashbaugh moved with his family to Southern California at the age of six. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and a master's degree from the University of California. He moved to New York City in 1969 to take up residence near leading artists and began exhibiting his paintings in galleries throughout the city and internationally. Richard William Hamilton CH (24 February 1922 – 13 September 2011) was an English painter and collage artist. Caio Fonseca
Caio Fonseca (born 1959) is an American painter. He is the son of the Uruguayan sculptor Gonzalo Fonseca; the artist Bruno Fonseca was his brother, and the writer Isabel Fonseca is his sister. Life and work Fonseca grew up in the West Village of Manhattan, New York City, where his father had his sculpture studio. He lived for five years in Barcelona, Spain, where he studied under , whose father had taught Gonzalo Fonseca in Uruguay in the 1940s. After this he spent some time in Uruguay, moved for several years to Pietrasanta, close to the marble quarries of Carrara in north-western Tuscany, Italy, and then lived and painted in Paris. Vernon Fisher
Vernon Fisher (born 1943) is an artist born in Fort Worth, Texas. He earned a BA in English literature from Hardin–Simmons University in 1967 and an MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1969. He taught at Austin College and later at University of North Texas. The artist is best known for his paintings that resemble chalk on a school blackboard, often with incongruous elements added. William Eggleston
William Eggleston (born July 27, 1939) is an American photographer. He is widely credited with increasing recognition for color photography as a legitimate artistic medium. Eggleston's books include ''William Eggleston's Guide'' (1976) and ''The Democratic Forest'' (1989). Early years William Eggleston was born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Sumner, Mississippi. Jim DeFrance
Jim DeFrance (born, 1940 Alliance, Nebraska; died 2014 Los Angeles, California) was a West Coast artist known for his abstract, shaped panel paintings and meticulous constructions. He utilized a reductive process while incorporating architectural references, geometric foundations, and fine carpentry into his work. He was most known for his “Slot” paintings, where he developed a surface structure of trapezoids on top of a bold color field. Career DeFrance was born in Alliance, Nebraska in 1940. Gene Davis (painter)
Gene Davis (August 22, 1920 - April 6, 1985) was an American Color Field painter known especially for his paintings of vertical stripes of color. Biography Davis was born in Washington D.C. in 1920 and spent nearly all his life there. Before he began to paint in 1949, he worked as a sportswriter, covering the Washington Football Team and other local teams. Working as a journalist in the late 1940s, he covered the Roosevelt and Truman presidential administrations, and was often President Truman's partner for poker games. His first art studio was in his apartment on Scott Circle; later he worked out of a studio on Pennsylvania Avenue. Dale Chihuly () (born September 20, 1941) is an American glass artist and entrepreneur. He is best known in the field of blown glass, "moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture". Early life Dale Patrick Chihuly was born on September 20, 1941, in Tacoma, Washington. His parents were George and Viola Chihuly; his paternal grandfather was born in Slovakia. Sandro Chia (born 20 April 1946) is an Italian painter and sculptor. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he was, with Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Nicola De Maria, and Mimmo Paladino, a principal member of the Italian Neo-Expressionist movement which was baptised Transavanguardia by Achille Bonito Oliva. Marsha Lynn Burns (born 1945) is an American photographer. Early life and education Burns was born in Seattle, Washington.
