Vernon Fisher
Vernon Fisher (born 1943) is an artist born in Fort Worth, Texas. He earned a BA in English literature from Hardin–Simmons University in 1967 and an MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1969. He taught at Austin College and later at University of North Texas. The artist is best known for his paintings that resemble chalk on a school blackboard, often with incongruous elements added. ''Fish'', in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art, is an example these "blackboard paintings". Fish are aquatic, craniate, gill-bearing animals that lack limbs with digits. Included in this definition are the living hagfish, lampreys, and cartilaginous and bony fish as well as various extinct related groups. Approximately 95% of living fish species are ray-finned fish, belonging to the class Actinopterygii, with around 99% of those being teleosts. The earliest organisms that can be classified as fish were soft-bodied chordates that first appeared during the Cambrian period. Although they lacked a true spine, they possessed notochords which allowed them to be more agile than their invertebrate counterparts.
