Jim DeFrance
Jim DeFrance (born, 1940 Alliance, Nebraska; died 2014 Los Angeles, California) was a West Coast artist known for his abstract, shaped panel paintings and meticulous constructions. He utilized a reductive process while incorporating architectural references, geometric foundations, and fine carpentry into his work. He was most known for his “Slot” paintings, where he developed a surface structure of trapezoids on top of a bold color field. Career DeFrance was born in Alliance, Nebraska in 1940. His father was a cabinetmaker and this influence led him to study architecture before deciding to be a fine artist. In 1961 at the age of 21, DeFrance attended the Yale University Summer School of Music and Art in Norfolk, Connecticut before moving to Colorado, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Art at the University of Colorado Boulder. Alliance, Nebraska
Alliance is a city and the county seat of Box Butte County, in the western part of the state of Nebraska, in the Great Plains region of the United States. Its population was 8,151 at the 2020 census. Alliance is the home to Carhenge, a replica of Stonehenge constructed with automobiles, which is located north of the city. It is also the location of Alliance Municipal Airport, the least-used airport in the mainland United States. History The town was originally named Grand Lake. When the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad came to Grand Lake in 1888, the railroad superintendent, G.W. Holdrege, wanted to change it to a simple one-word name closer to the beginning of the alphabet, which he thought would be better for business. Nicholas Wilder
Nicholas Walter George Wilder (1937May 12, 1989) was an American art dealer and owner of an eponymous contemporary art gallery in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s. He later closed his gallery, returned to his native New York, and developed a second career as a painter. Biography Wilder was born in Rochester, New York. His father was a scientist for Kodak and helped develop Kodachrome film. His father died when Wilder was aged 11 from cancer, which Wilder believed was related to the industrial nature of his work. The ''Los Angeles Times'' says that Wilder was falsely believed to be an heir to the Kodak company, which helped create a mystique upon arrival in Los Angeles. He suffered from dyslexia throughout his life. He graduated from Amherst College in 1960, having studied under Henry Steele Commager.
