Champagne Stakes (ATC)
The Champagne Stakes is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 horse race for two-year-old Thoroughbreds at set weights run at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, Australia over a distance of 1,600 metres during the Sydney Autumn Carnival. Prize money is A$500,000. History The inaugural running of the race was on the second day of the Australian Jockey Club Autumn Meet in 1861 as the fourth race on the six race card. The winner was Exeter trained by the famous trainer of the time Etienne de Mestre. The race became the premier AJC sprint race for two-year-olds for nearly 80 years. With the introduction of the richer Golden Slipper Stakes in 1957, the AJC decided on extending the distance of the race to 1 mile (1972) and as such creating a natural progression for elite two year old races that is now known as the Juvenile Triple Crown – Golden Slipper Stakes, Sires Produce Stakes (ATC) and Champagne Stakes. Baguette was an Australian bred Thoroughbred racehorse that was undefeated as a two-year-old and became the first winner of the Two Year Old Triple Crown. Noholme
Noholme (also known as Noholme II)and who took nearly a full second off the race record in winning the prestigious Cox Plate. He was sired by Star Kingdom (IRE), the Leading sire in Australia on five occasions and sire of Sky High etc. Noholme's dam, Oceana, was a daughter of the brilliant miler Colombo (won 2,000 Guineas Stakes) from the good mare Orama by Diophon (also won the 2,000 Guineas). Sky High was an outstanding Australian Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Some of his major race victories include the 1960 STC Golden Slipper Stakes, 1960 VRC Derby, 1961 and 1962 VRC Lightning Stakes and the 1961 AJC Epsom Handicap. Breeding Foaled in 1957 he was son of the champion sire Star Kingdom (IRE) from Flight's Daughter by Helios (GB). He was bred and raced by former AJC chairman Sir Brian Crowley. Storm Queen was a notable Australian thoroughbred racehorse. A bay daughter of Coronation Boy from the mare Storm Gleam, she was foaled in 1963 and was trained throughout her career by Bart Cummings. King's Legacy
King's Legacy (foaled 1 September 2017) is a multiple Group 1 winning Australian thoroughbred racehorse. Background King's Legacy was the third highest priced lot sold at the 2019 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. He was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $1.4 million. Racing career 2019/20: two-year-old season King's Legacy began his racing career in a mid-week maiden at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse finishing in third placing. The colt then started at the odds of 5/1 in the B J McLachlan Plate at Eagle Farm Racecourse. Under the guidance of jockey Kerrin McEvoy the horse won by a margin of half a length. As a result of this win, King's Legacy gained a start in the Magic Millions Classic for two-year-olds a fortnight later. He finished in 5th placing.
