Castleman Trailway
The Castleman Trailway is a footpath in Southern England. Portions of the trailway are also used as a cyclepath but the middle section from East Wimborne (close to The Old Thatch public house) to the River Allen bridge (just south of Wimborne) is not cyclable. One trailhead is on Barrack Lane in Ringwood and the other trailhead is the car park at Upton Country Park. (From here, a cycle path runs along the sea front, all the way to Poole railway station). The entire Castleman Trailway path is waymarked. The path passes through the villages of Ashley Heath, West Moors, Oakley, Broadstone and Upton, as well as Upton Heath and Upton Country Park. The trailway is part of the former Southampton and Dorchester Railway line which ran from Brockenhurst to Hamworthy Junction via Ringwood. It was known as "The Old Road". Oakley, Dorset
Oakley is a village community in Dorset, England. Sitting just south of the River Stour it borders the suburb of Merley and the village of Canford Magna to the East and South and the Town of Wimborne 2 km to the North. The B3073, which links Wimborne and Poole, runs through the community. Oakley has four major roads; Oakley Hill, Oakley Lane, Oakley Road and Merley Ways and approximately 800 individual dwellings. Smaller roads include Ullswater Road, Silverwood Close and Harrier Drive. Buildings and architecture A conservation area covers Oakley and its attractive Lady Wimborne Cottages. There are hundreds of long-distance footpaths in the United Kingdom designated in publications from public authorities, guidebooks and OS maps. Bournemouth () is a coastal resort town in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council area of Dorset, England. Charles Castleman (Hampshire)
Charles Castleman (1807–1876) was an English solicitor, railway planner, justice of the peace and prison inspector. Personal life Born 1807 at Allendale House in Wimborne to William Castleman (founder of the Christchurch, Wimborne and Ringwood Bank), Charles was one of ten children, only three of whom survived into adulthood (Charles, Henry and Edward - all becoming solicitors). He first married Martha, who died of a fever at the age of 41 in 1848, and then married Louisa Hussey in 1852, who died of tuberculosis in 1854. He married Isabel Swinburne in 1859, and in 1862 they moved to the Glasshayes estate in Lyndhurst, New Forest. Whilst in residence at Lyndhurst he gifted the clock to the clocktower of the newly built local church of St Michael and All Angels. He and Isabel later moved to Surrey, and then on to Bishopstoke in Eastleigh where he suffered kidney failure, dying on 17 July 1876. Hamworthy Railway Station
Hamworthy railway station serves Hamworthy, an area of Poole in Dorset, England. It is down the line from . History The station opened with the Southampton & Dorchester Railway, which later became part of the London and South Western Railway (LSWR), in 1847 as Poole Junction, being the junction of the main line with the spur to the port of Poole. At that time the line to then went via , and before following what is now the South West Main Line from . When the current Poole station opened in 1872, the station was renamed Hamworthy Junction and remained so until the 1970s. The Southampton and Dorchester Railway was an English railway company formed to join Southampton in Hampshire with Dorchester, Dorset, Dorchester in Dorset, with hopes of forming part of a route from London to Exeter. It received Parliamentary authority in 1845 and opened in 1847. Upton is a town in south-east Dorset, England. Upton is to the east of Holton Heath and Upton Heath, and to the north of the Poole suburb of Hamworthy. It is the second largest town in the Purbeck Hills. Geography The town is built around a road junction where the Blandford to Hamworthy road crosses the main Poole to Dorchester road.
