Castigloine del Genovesi is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. Until 1862 it was known simply as Castiglione. It takes its current name from the philosopher and economist Antonio Genovesi, who was born here in 1713. Antonio Genovesi
Antonio Genovesi (1 November 171322 September 1769) was an Italian writer on philosophy and political economy. Biography Son of Salvatore Genovese, a shoemaker, and Adriana Alfinito of San Mango, Antonio Genovesi was born in Castiglione, near Salerno in 1713. He began studying early on under the direction of his father and, at fourteen, under Niccolò Genovesi, a relative, and young doctor from Naples, who taught Antonio peripatetic philosophy for two years, and Cartesian philosophy for another year. When he was eighteen, during his theological studies, he fell in love with a girl from Castiglione, Angela Dragone. His father didn't approve of the couple, and sent his son to a convent of Augustinian monks in Buccino, home of some of his relatives. Here he continued his theological and philosophical studies under the priest Giovanni Abbamonte, focusing his interest on Latin and Greek. Fisciano is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. It is dominated by the University of Salerno, which built a new campus in the town in 1988. Giffoni Sei Casali (Campanian: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. History The communal seat, Capitignano, appeared when the Romans destroyed Picentia, whose inhabitants took refuge on the mountains nearby. The modern name, according to tradition, would derive from ''Caput Jani'' ("Janus' head"), referring to the head of statue of the god which they brought to the new site. Capitignano was part of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies until 1860, as part of the district of Salerno. Geography The municipality is situated in a hill zone by the Picentini mountain range.
