Fisciano is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. It is dominated by the University of Salerno, which built a new campus in the town in 1988. The municipality borders with Baronissi, Calvanico, Castiglione del Genovesi, Giffoni Sei Casali, Mercato San Severino and Montoro. Economy The economy is based on agriculture and animal husbandry; the traditional copper working activities ceased in the 1980s, although there are some industrial plants (metal-working/ mechanics, glass and plastics sectors). Transport Fisciano is served by a railway station on the line Salerno-Mercato San Severino. Lancusi
Lancusi is a southern Italian village and hamlet (''frazione'') of Fisciano, a municipality in the province of Salerno, Campania. With a population of circa 4,000 (2011), it is the most populated settlement of its municipality, including the administrative town. History First mentioned in 1309 with the name of ''Lanciusi'', the village was an independent barony of the Principality of Sanseverino. Geography Lancusi spans on a plain, named Irno Valley, west of the Picentini mountain range, near the springs of Irno river. The village is urbanistically contiguous, almost fused, with the village of Bolano; and other nearest settlements are Baronissi, Penta, Sava and Orignano. The University of Salerno ( it, Università degli Studi di Salerno, UNISA) is a university located in Fisciano and in Baronissi, Italy. Its main campus is located in Fisciano while the Faculty of Medicine is located in Baronissi. It is organized in ten faculties. History Salerno's Schola Medica Salernitana was the most important medical school in Europe between the 10th and 13th centuries. Following the rise of university medical schools, it briefly merged with the University of Naples, which moved to Salerno from 1253 to 1258 before returning to Naples and establishing its own medical school there. Meanwhile, the University of Montpellier displaced Salerno as the most prestigious medical school internationally and by the 14th century the latter had ceased to exist. Mercato San Severino ( Sanseverinese: ) is a town and ''comune'' of the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-west Italy. Mercato San Severino shares borders with the municipalities of Baronissi, Bracigliano, Castel San Giorgio, Cava de' Tirreni, Fisciano, Montoro, Roccapiemonte and Siano. Montoro ( nap, Muntuorë; Montorese: ) is an Italian ''comune'' (municipality) of the province of Avellino, Campania. The municipal seat is in the town of Piano. History Following a referendum, the municipality was officially created on 3 December 2013, after the merging of Montoro Inferiore and Montoro Superiore. Giffoni Sei Casali (Campanian: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. History The communal seat, Capitignano, appeared when the Romans destroyed Picentia, whose inhabitants took refuge on the mountains nearby. The modern name, according to tradition, would derive from ''Caput Jani'' ("Janus' head"), referring to the head of statue of the god which they brought to the new site. Capitignano was part of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies until 1860, as part of the district of Salerno. Geography The municipality is situated in a hill zone by the Picentini mountain range.
