Castelmezzano (Castelmezzano dialect: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Potenza, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. It is bounded by the comuni of Albano di Lucania, Anzi, Laurenzana, Pietrapertosa, Trivigno. It is part of the club The most beautiful villages in Italy. In 2007 Castelmezzano was chosen by Arthur Frommer's ''Budget Travel'' magazine among "The best places you've never heard of". Anthony (born Antonio) Campagna, Count of Castelmezzano (December 31, 1884 – May 8, 1969) was a prominent real estate developer and member of the Board of Education in New York City. Today, he is best known for the destruction of architecturally significant buildings and the subsequent development of new luxury buildings in New York City. Early life Campagna was born in Castelmezzano, Italy in 1884. His father was a builder. His brother Armino Campagna (1898–1985), who married his wife's sister Christina Paterno, also moved to New York and worked in real estate with him. He received his preliminary education in Potenza, later attended the University of Rome and graduated, with honors, from the law school at the University of Naples in 1906. Castelmezzano Dialect
The dialect of Castelmezzano is a Romance variety spoken in Castelmezzano in the Province of Potenza in Italy. It constitutes a dialect of the Neapolitan language that differs from the rest (and from neighbouring imported Gallo-Italic varieties) in its treatment of Latin back vowels, showing an evolution more reminiscent of Balkan Romance: Latin /ŭ/ merges with /ū/ rather than with /ō/. Castelmezzano is but the kernel of an area, dubbed the () by Lausberg, which shares the same vowel development. Eugenio Santoro
Eugenio Santoro (27 August 1920 – 13 May 2006), was an Italian-born Swiss outsider artist. Biography Born at Castelmezzano, in the province of Potenza ( Basilicata), he started as a carpenter but he had to quit his job going to the front during World War II . He fought in Albania and Greece but got arrested and deported to Germany, where he was sentenced to hard labor in the Rhineland for two years. Santoro was released in 1944 and returned to his native town working as a municipal employee and then as an owner of a small woodworking shop. In 1964, due to financial difficulties, he moved to Switzerland with his wife, finding employment as a laborer at the chocolate factory " Camille Bloch" in Courtelary. His passion for art began in 1979, representing a painting of the factory; then he came to sculpture. His works are mostly wooden sculptures depicting human and animal figures. Dolomiti lucane is a mountain range in the region of Basilicata, southern Italy. Located in the Southern Apennines and dominating the Basento Valley, the range is at the heart of the Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park, which also include the Gallipoli-Cognato forest. Lyons and Yosco were an American comedy duo, consisting of Italian American musicians George Lyons and Bob Yosco. They were defined by the '' Ottawa Evening Journal'' "the finest pair of Italian street musicians playing in the Vaudeville ranks." They toured the United States from 1909 into 1923, doing a musical and comedy act.
