Carl De Vogt
Carl de Vogt (14 September 1885 – 16 February 1970) was a German film actor who starred in four of Fritz Lang's early films. He attended the acting school in Cologne, Germany. Together with acting he was also active as a singer and recorded several discs. His greatest hit was "Der Fremdenlegionär". An extremely successful actor in his early career, he died in relative obscurity in 1970. In 1919 and 1920, de Vogt starred in director Fritz Lang's two-part ''Spiders'' films opposite actresses Lil Dagover and Ressel Orla. In 1932, in the early sound era, he played the Prussian hero Major Schill in the big-budget historical film '' The Eleven Schill Officers''. De Vogt was married to the German film actress Cläre Lotto, and the couple had a son Karl Franz de Vogt (born 14 May 1917). He was a member of the NSDAP and the Sturmabteilung. The (; SA; literally "Storm Detachment") was the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party. It played a significant role in Adolf Hitler's rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s. Its primary purposes were providing protection for Nazi rallies and assemblies, disrupting the meetings of opposing parties, fighting against the paramilitary units of the opposing parties, especially the ''Roter Frontkämpferbund'' of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and the '' Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold'' of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), and intimidating Romani, trade unionists, and especially Jews. The film was an adaptation of the latter half of the Karl May novel ''From Baghdad to Stamboul'', and is now considered to be lost. It was a sequel to Stein's earlier 1920 film ''On the Brink of Paradise''. Béla Lugosi played a supporting role as a sheik. Erwin Baron, who wrote the screenplay, also played Omram in the film. Plot Kara Ben Nemsi and his servant Haji Halef Omar join a group of Mohammedans on a pilgrimage to bury their dead. When a plague erupts, the two men become infected. Kara Ben Nemsi
Kara Ben Nemsi is a fictional main character from the works of Karl May, best-selling 19th century German author. An alter ego of May, the stories about Nemsi are written as first-person narratives. He travels across North Africa, Sudan, and the Ottoman Empire including various parts of the Middle East and the Balkans with his friend and servant Hadschi Halef Omar. Nemsi shares his two famous rifles with Old Shatterhand, another fictional alter ego of May, the ''Bärentöter'' (Bear Killer) and the ''Henrystutzen'' ( Henry Carbine). He rides the famed black horse Rih (from Arabic meaning "wind"). ''On the Brink of Paradise'' (german: Auf den Trümmern des Paradieses/ transl: ''On the Ruins of Paradise'') is a 1920 German 90-minute film directed by Josef Stein and featuring Carl de Vogt in the title role of Kara Ben Nemsi. Béla Lugosi was thought to have appeared in a supporting uncredited role, but this is disputed. The film was an adaptation of part of the 1892 Karl May novel ''Von Bagdad nach Stambul'' and is now considered to be lost. This film was followed by a sequel '' Caravan of Death'' (1920), which went on to adapt the latter part of the same Karl May novel (Bela Lugosi did co-star in the sequel, playing a shiek).
