Capt. John Gunnison House
The Capt. John Gunnison House is a historic house on Goshen Center Road in Goshen, New Hampshire. Built in 1812, it is one of the town's finer examples of Federal architecture. It was the childhood home and likely birthplace of John Williams Gunnison, a military officer who led exploratory expeditions in Colorado. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Description and history The Captain John Gunnison House is located in a rural setting of central Goshen, on the north side of Goshen Center Road about east of New Hampshire Route 31. It is a two-story wood-frame structure, with a hip roof and clapboarded exterior. Its main facade has five bays, with the door centered, with flanking sidelight windows and a false fanlight above. A single-story porch extends across the center three bays, supported by round columns. Two interior chimneys rise behind the main roof ridge, and only one of its original four fireplaces survives. Goshen is a town in Sullivan County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 796 at the 2020 census. History Incorporated in 1791, Goshen was first settled in 1768 as a part of Saville (now Sunapee). The name "Goshen" may have been taken from Goshen, Connecticut, where many residents had relatives. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which are land and are water, comprising 0.41% of the town. Goshen is drained by the South Branch Sugar River and its tributaries Blood Brook and Gunnison Brook, and hence lies almost fully within the Connecticut River watershed. Most of the southeast part of town is drained by Cherry Brook, one of the headwaters of the Ashuelot River, a southwest-flowing tributary of the Connecticut, but a small area at the southeast corner of town has the headwaters of the east-flowing West Branch Warner River, part of the Merrimack River watershed. John Williams Gunnison
John Williams Gunnison (November 11, 1812 – October 26, 1853) was an American military officer and explorer. Biography Gunnison was born in Goshen, New Hampshire, in 1812 and attended Hopkinton Academy in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. He graduated from West Point in 1837, second in his class of fifty cadets. His military career began as an artillery officer in Florida, where he spent a year in the campaign against the Seminoles. Due to his poor health he was reassigned to the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers the next year. Initially he explored unknown areas of Florida, searching for provision routes. However, his health soon forced him out of Florida entirely. From 1841-1849 Gunnison explored the area around the Great Lakes. He surveyed the border between Wisconsin and Michigan, the western coast of Lake Michigan, and the coast of Lake Erie. On May 9, 1846, he was promoted to first lieutenant.
