Capitol Hills Open
The Capitol Hills Open was a golf tournament held in the Philippines in February/March 1964. The event was on the Far East Circuit. Tomoo Ishii and Peter Thomson were tied for the lead entering the final round at 211 (−2). Ishii shot a final round 69 (−2) and won by two over Filipino Ben Arda. Celestino Tugot, also of the Philippines, was a further shot back at 283 (−1). He was the only other player to finish under par. Thomson faltered with a final round 73 and finished solo fourth at 284 (E). Amateurs Hsieh Min-Nan and Kuo Chie-Hsiung Kuo Chie-Hsiung (, born 25 May 1940) is a Taiwanese professional golfer. Far East Circuit
The Asia Golf Circuit was the principal men's professional golf tour in Southeast Asia from the early 1960s through to the mid-late 1990s. The tour was founded in 1961 as the Far East Circuit. The first series of five tournaments was held in 1962 and consisted of the national open championships of the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, plus a final tournament held in Japan. The tour gradually grew over the subsequent years, eventually becoming a regular ten tournament circuit in 1974. Leading players in the end of season standings were granted exemptions into major tournaments around the world, such as The Open Championship, the U.S. Open and the Memorial Tournament, and in later years were rewarded with playing status on the Japan Golf Tour. Stroke play, also known as medal play, is a scoring system in the sport of golf in which the total number of strokes is counted over one or more rounds of 18 holes. Tomoo Ishii
(9 June 1923 – 24 January 2022) was a Japanese professional golfer. Professional career Ishii was born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, and started playing golf at the age of 15. Ishii won a number of events on the Japanese and Asian circuits through the 1950s and 1960s. One of his top triumphs was at the 1964 Capitol Hills Open in Manila, Philippines on the Far East Circuit. Ishii was tied for the lead with Australian golfer Peter Thomson at the beginning of the fourth round. He outshot Thomson by four strokes over the course of the final round to win. His good play helped him earn three consecutive special foreign invitations to the Masters in the mid-1960s. He was one of the first Asian players to play in the event. Peter Thomson (golfer)
Peter William Thomson (23 August 1929 – 20 June 2018) was an Australian professional golfer. He won the Open Championship five times between 1954 and 1965. Thomson is the only golfer in the modern era to win a major three times in succession – The Open in 1954, 1955 and 1956. Life Thomson was born in Brunswick, a northern suburb of Melbourne, Australia. His Open Championship wins came in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, and 1965. He was the only man to win the tournament for three consecutive years in the 20th century. Thomson was a prolific tournament champion around the world, winning the national championships of ten countries, including the New Zealand Open nine times. Ben Arda
Ben Arda (13 June 1929 – 20 December 2006) was a Filipino professional golfer. Arda, known as ''Bantam Ben'' and ''the Toy Tiger'' because of his small stature, was one of Asia's leading golfers during the 1960s and 1970s. He was the first Filipino to qualify for the Masters Tournament and The Open Championship. He won nine tournaments on the Asia Golf Circuit, including the Philippine Open three times, and headed the points list in 1970. He also won four times on the Japan Golf Tour and played in the World Cup 16 times, recording a best finish of 2nd place in 1977 with playing partner Rudy Lavares. Celestino Tugot
Celestino "Tino" Mancao Tugot (6 April 1910 – 18 January 2010) was a Filipino professional golfer. A local golf legend, Tugot is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best golfers the Philippines has produced, and the first Filipino athlete to step into the White House and shake hands with US President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954. Tugot won his national open title six times between 1949 and 1962, including four consecutively from 1955 and represented the Philippines in the World Cup on ten occasions. Hsieh Min-Nan (, born 9 August 1940), also known as Tony Hsieh, is a Taiwanese professional golfer. Hsieh won 11 events on the Japan Golf Tour. He won the 1972 World Cup with teammate Lu Liang-Huan and also won the individual title. He won many other tournaments in Asia and was the Asia Golf Circuit overall champion on three occasions, in 1971, 1975 and 1977. Kuo Chie-Hsiung
Kuo Chie-Hsiung (, born 25 May 1940) is a Taiwanese professional golfer. Kuo played on the Japan Golf Tour, winning four times including three tournaments in a five week span during 1979, and the Asia Golf Circuit, winning nine tournaments. He was the 1974 Asia Golf Circuit champion after wins in the Indian and Taiwan opens, and narrowly missed out of defending the championship the following year when topped the money list but finished half a point behind Hsieh Min-Nan despite winning three tournaments during the season. He also led the money list in 1978, but was again runner-up in the points race. Kuo also had a great deal of success in his homeland and won many other tournaments throughout Asia.
