Gairdner Foundation
The Gairdner Foundation is a non-profit organization devoted to the recognition of outstanding achievements in biomedical research worldwide. It was created in 1957 by James Arthur Gairdner to recognize and reward the achievements of medical researchers whose work contributes significantly to improving the quality of human life. Since the first awards were made in 1959, the Gairdner Awards have become Canada's most prestigious medical awards, recognizing and celebrating the research of the world’s best and brightest biomedical researchers. Since 1959, more than 390 Canada Gairdner Awards have been given to scientists from 35 countries; of these recipients, 95 have subsequently gone on to win a Nobel Prize. Gairdner Foundation International Award
The Canada Gairdner International Award is given annually by the Gairdner Foundation at a special dinner to five individuals for outstanding discoveries or contributions to medical science. Receipt of the Gairdner is traditionally considered a precursor to winning the Nobel Prize in Medicine; as of 2020, 95 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to prior Gairdner recipients. Canada Gairdner International Awards are given annually in the amount of $100,000 (each) payable in Canadian funds and can be awarded to residents of any country in the world. Elizabeth Eisenhauer
Elizabeth Eisenhauer is a Canadian oncologist who has spent a large portion of her career undertaking phase I and II trials of novel cancer therapies through her role as Director of the Investigational New Drug Program in the Canadian Cancer Trials Group. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Queen's University and was trained in internal medicine and hematology, obtaining fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Eisenhauer is an Emerita professor in the Department of Oncology at Queen's University, and was Department Head from 2012 to 2017. Connie Eaves
Connie Jean Eaves, CorrFRSE (née Constance Halperin; born May 22, 1944), is a Canadian biologist with significant contributions to cancer and stem cell research. Eaves is a professor generics of genetics at the University of British Columbia and is also the co-founder with Allen C Eaves of Terry Fox Laboratory (Vancouver, Canada). Education and career In high school, Eaves was interested in becoming a physician but later decided to pursue into research due to gender discrimination in medical school acceptance rates. Frances Alice Shepherd, is a Canadian oncologist recognized for her research on lung cancer and her contributions to the design, development, and conduct of clinical trials. She is currently a senior staff physician at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, where she has held the Scott Taylor Chair in Lung Cancer Research since 2001, and she is a full professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Antoine Hakim
Antoine M. Hakim (born April 30, 1942) is a Canadian engineer and physician. He first trained as a chemical engineer and worked for Syncrude in Alberta. Wishing to change careers, Hakim taught school for a short time in Montreal. He then earned a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York and went on to study medicine at Albany Medical College. He completed his residency at the Montreal Neurological Institute and later became a professor at McGill University. In 1992, he became chair of the Neurology department and director of the Neuroscience Research Institute at the University of Ottawa. Frank Plummer
Francis Allan Plummer (2 December 1952 – 4 February 2020) was a Canadian scientist, academic and HIV/AIDS researcher. He was "a recognized specialist in infectious diseases whose work influenced public health policy in Canada and abroad". He was Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Medical Microbiology at the University of Manitoba and Scientific Director General, National Microbiology Laboratory. Janet Rossant
Janet Rossant, (born 13 July 1950) is a developmental biologist well known for her contributions to the understanding of the role of genes in embryo development. She is a world renowned leader in developmental biology. Her current research interests focus on stem cells, molecular genetics, and developmental biology. Specifically, she uses cellular and genetic manipulation techniques to study how genes control both normal and abnormal development of early mouse embryos. Rossant has discovered information on embryo development, how multiple types of stem cells are established, and the mechanisms by which genes control development.
