Camillo Filippi
Camillo Filippi (died 1574) was an Italian painter who flourished about the middle of the 16th century. Biography Filippo was born in Ferrara. He was a disciple of Dosso Dossi, and painted historical works with some success. The ''Annunciation'' in the choir of the church of Santa Maria in Vado at Ferrara is attributed to Filippo; as is the ''Trinity'' in the Church of the Jesuits. He painted for the fresco cycle of Oratorio dell'Annunziata, Ferrara. His death took place in 1574. His son, Sebastiano Filippi (Il Bastianino), became a prominent local painter. Dosso Dossi
Giovanni di Niccolò de Luteri, better known as Dosso Dossi ( 1489–1542), was an Italian Renaissance painter who belonged to the School of Ferrara, painting in a style mainly influenced by Venetian painting, in particular Giorgione and early Titian. From 1514 to his death he was court artist to the Este Dukes of Ferrara and of Modena, whose small court valued its reputation as an artistic centre. He often worked with his younger brother Battista Dossi, who had worked under Raphael. He painted many mythological subjects and allegories with a rather dream-like atmospheres, and often striking disharmonies in colour. Santa Maria in Vado is a church located on Via Borgovado number 3 in Ferrara, Region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. History The church derives its name from a guado or fording (''vado'' in dialect) that was located nearby. A church at the site was documented since the tenth century, but on Easter of 1171, a eucharistic miracle occurred when blood spouted from the host during consecration. This made the church an object of pilgrimage. This miracle that appears to confirm transubstantiation resembles the subsequent events depicted in ''The Mass at Bolsena ''by Raphael. Reconstruction was started in 1495 under the patronage of Ercole de' Roberti under the designs of Biagio Rossetti. The oratorio dell'Annunziata (Oratory of the Virgin of the Annunciation), once called the Oratory of Sant'Apollinare or the Oratory of the Compagnia delle Morte, is found in via Borgo di Sotto 49 in Ferrara. Sebastiano Filippi
Sebastiano Filippi (or Bastianino; ca. 1536 – 23 August 1602) was an Italian late Renaissance – Mannerist painter of the School of Ferrara. Biography He was born in Lendinara to a painter, Camillo Filippi, who had worked under Dosso Dossi. He initially likely apprenticed with his father and brother ( Cesare Filippi), and is thought to have worked with them when they painted a processional standard ''Gonfalone'' for the ''Oratorio dell'Annunziata'' in Ferrara. He left Ferrara, dominated by the likes of Dosso Dossi, Il Garofalo, and Girolamo da Carpi, as a young man to find work in Rome. In Rome, he is said to have been recommended by Jacopo Bonacossi, the Ferrarese doctor of the Pope, to enter training with Michelangelo. He worked for seven years under the master in Rome, then returned to Ferrara in 1553, where he enjoyed the general patronage of the arts by Duke Alfonso I d'Este and subsequently his son Alfonso II. Cesare Filippi
Cesare Filippi (1536 – after 1602) was an Italian painter. He was the younger son and pupil of Camillo Filippi. Cesare was born at Ferrara in 1536. He assisted his father and brother Sebastiano in their works, and excelled in painting heads and grotesques in the ornamental style, although he sometimes attempted historical subjects, which are very feeble imitations of the style of his brother.
