Cairns Municipal Council
The City of Cairns was a local government area centred on the Far North Queensland city of Cairns. Established in 1885, for most of its existence it consisted of approximately around Cairns itself, with much of the metropolitan area being located in the Shire of Mulgrave. The Shire amalgamated into the City on 22 March 1995, as did small sections of neighbouring shires. In 2008, the City amalgamated with the Shire of Douglas to become the Cairns Region. History Following a petition by local residents, on 28 May 1885, the Borough of Cairns was established under the ''Local Government Act 1878'', being excised from the Cairns Division. With the passage of the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'', the Borough of Cairns became the Town of Cairns on 31 March 1903. On 12 October 1923, the Town of Cairns was proclaimed City of Cairns. Bungalow is an inner suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia. In the Bungalow had a population of 2,159 people. Aeroglen is a coastal suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Aeroglen had a population of 403 people. It is approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles) north of the Cairns City centre. Geography The suburb is bounded to the north by the Barron River, to the east by the Coral Sea, to the south by Lily Creek, and to the west loosely by the Captain Cook Highway but with one small pocket of housing to the west of the highway. Cairns (, ) is a city in Queensland, Australia, on the tropical north east coast of Far North Queensland. The population in June 2019 was 153,952, having grown on average 1.02% annually over the preceding five years. The city is the 5th-most-populous in Queensland, and 15th in Australia. The city was founded in 1876 and named after Sir William Wellington Cairns, following the discovery of gold in the Hodgkinson river. Val Schier
Valerie Jean Schier was the mayor of the Cairns Regional Council, Queensland, Australia from March 2008 until May 2012. Schier was born on 22 April 1950 and grew up in Falmouth, a small village on the north east coast of Tasmania. She moved to Cairns in 1982 and bought a house at Machans Beach in 1984. On 15 March 2008, Schier was elected Mayor of the newly amalgamated Cairns Regional Council, a position she maintained until her defeat in May 2012 by Bob Manning. Kevin Byrne (mayor)
Kevin Michael Byrne (born 1949) was Mayor of the City of Cairns in Queensland, Australia, from 1992 to 1995, and then from 2000 to 2008. Early life He was born in Lae, Papua New Guinea 1949. His family had first arrived in Papua New Guinea in 1906 when his grandfather was appointed Chief Collector of Customs in Port Moresby. His primary education was on Manus Island, Papua New Guinea and he attended Nudgee College, Brisbane from 1963 until 1967. Military career Byrne graduated in 1969 from Officer Cadet School, Portsea, Victoria (OCS Portsea) with an Australian Army commission. He was awarded the Sword of Honour for Leadership in that year. Tom Pyne
Thomas Alfred Pyne (31 January 1935 – 30 October 2011) was an Australian politician. He was the shire chairman of the Shire of Mulgrave from 1979 to 1995, and following the amalgamation of Mulgrave with the City of Cairns, was Mayor of Cairns from 1995 to 2000. His son, Rob Pyne, was a Cairns City Councillor and State Member (Labor and Independent) for Cairns in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland.
