CKXD-FM (98.7 FM) is a Canadian radio station broadcasting from Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, at 98.7 MHz with a classic rock format branded on-air as ''97.5 K-Rock''. History The station launched between 1973 and 1974 as CJCR at 1350 kHz, and is currently owned by Stingray Group. In 1977, after Don Jamieson bought out Geoff Stirling's interest in Radio CJYQ-930 Ltd., CJCR was renamed CFYQ. In 1983, Jamieson sold his company to CHUM Limited. In 1989, CHUM Limited sold the "Q" stations to Newcap. By 1990, CFYQ had changed frequencies to 1010. In 1990, CFYQ's program feed changed from CJYQ to CKIX-FM and changed its call letters again to CKXD. In 1999, with the AM equipment nearing the end of its life cycle, CKXD officially made its move to 98.7 FM. In the early 2000s, CKXD re-branded from ''KIXX Country'' to ''Magic 98'' with a hot adult contemporary format, and shortly afterwards to ''98.7 K-Rock'' with a classic rock format. CKGA is an AM radio station in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, broadcasting at 650 kHz. Owned by Stingray Group, CKGA first went on the air in 1969 at 730 kHz, but moved to 650 in 1988. CKXX-FM is a Canadian radio station broadcasting from Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador on 103.9 MHz with a classic rock format branded on-air as ''97.5 K-Rock''. It is currently owned by Stingray Group. History CKXX-FM launched by the noted broadcaster Alex J. Walling on August 6, 1984 as CKWK at 1340 kHz. For the first year and a half of CKWK's existence, they tried many things to bring up listenership and broaden the appeal of its fledgling station. Many of these programs were quite successful. The Jukebox Saturday Night Party was quite popular and would attract listeners from as far away as Gander who were able to receive CKWK's 10,000-watt signal clearly at night. CKIX-FM is a Canadian radio station broadcasting on 99.1 FM in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The station currently broadcasts a Top 40/CHR format branded as ''Hot 99.1''. The station is owned by Stingray Group. History Launched by CHUM Limited on October 15, 1983, CKIX-FM originally carried a country format known as ''Country 99 FM'' and then later in the 1980s as ''KIXX Country''. Newcap acquired CKIX and sister station CJYQ from CHUM in 1989. In 1991, the studios were relocated from Duckworth Street to 208 Kenmount Road (which the Capital Hotel now occupies). Stingrays are a group of sea rays, which are cartilaginous fish related to sharks. The Bonavista Peninsula is a large peninsula on the east coast of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Clarenville is a town on the east coast of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Clarenville was incorporated in 1951. It is located in the Shoal Harbour valley, fronting an arm of the Atlantic Ocean called Random Sound.
