Bonavista Peninsula
The Bonavista Peninsula is a large peninsula on the east coast of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It consists of 50 incorporated towns/unincorporated communities which have a population of 12,176 as of the 2016 Canadian Census. Bonavista is the largest population centre on the peninsula. The peninsula runs 85 km northeast from a 19 km wide isthmus and measures between 15–40 km in width. It separates Bonavista Bay in the north from Trinity Bay to the south. Geography Starting at the Trinity Bay side it commences at the northeastern part of the bay at Shoal Harbour, immediately north of Clarenville. Continuing east the peninsula's south shore includes the communities of Trinity and Catalina, with Port Rexton in Robinhood Bay between them, ending at its easternmost tip at Cape Bonavista. Elliston, Newfoundland And Labrador
Elliston is an incorporated fishing settlement situated on the Bonavista Peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada. Incorporated in 1965, the town of Elliston was once called Bird Island Cove and it is composed of a number of communities, North Side, Noder Cover, Elliston Centre, Elliston Point, Porter's Point, Sandy Cove, The Neck and Maberly. Elliston is known as the Root Cellar Capital of the World and has claimed that title from the 135 root cellars that exist in the community. Elliston was renamed from Bird Island Cove by Reverend Charles Lench to honour the first Methodist Missionary, Reverend William Ellis, to this community. The name Bird Island Cove was used since the early 17th century and it gets its name from two small islands, North and South Bird Island, that lie off the south entrance of this cove. Port Rexton is a small town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located on the East Coast of the island of Newfoundland at the north end of Robinhood Bay, about 10 minutes east of Trinity and 3 hours north of St. John's. The town had a population of 690 in 1940, 449 in 1951, 454 in 1956, 351 in the Canada 2006 Census, 338 in the Canada 2011 Census and most recently 340 in the Canada 2016 Census. John Cabot ( it, Giovanni Caboto ; 1450 – 1500) was an Italian navigator and explorer. Route 238, also known as Elliston Road, is a north-south highway on the northeastern corner of the Bonavista Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. It is one of very few highways in Newfoundland and Labrador that both begin and end at the same highway, this one being Route 230 (Bonavista Peninsula Highway).
