World ParaVolley, formerly the World Organization Volleyball for Disabled (WOVD), is an international organization that is for people with physical disabilities. It is affiliated with the International Paralympic Committee(IPC). The World Organization Volleyball for Disabled was established in 1981 and was part of the International Sports Organization for Disabled (ISOD). In 1992 the WOVD became its own separate Organization in Barcelona, Spain. The WOVD Headquarters were also established in the Netherlands. The WOVD is responsible for managing and controlling the conduct of international volleyball competitions for men, women and youth. The WOVD also liaises with IPC (as an independent organisation) and with other organizations for people with or without disabilities. The organization adopted its present name World ParaVolley at its 2014 general assembly. Several sports related to volleyball have become popular. Indoor volleyball and beach volleyball are both events at the Olympics, and sitting volleyball is an event at the Paralympics. Other varieties are localised, or are played at an amateur or informal level. Aquatic volleyball Biribol was the first aquatic variant of volleyball. It was invented in the '60s in Birigui, Brazil, and has moderate popularity in the country. Aquatic volleyball is a team sport similar to volleyball but adapted for competition in a shallow swimming pool. It is also referred to as "pool volleyball", and sometimes as "aqua polo", not to be confused with water polo. Players must change sides after each round for it to be fair. Each round is up to 15 points, however, you need to win by two points. If the ball hits the edge of the pool but bounces back in, that is fair. Pieter Joon
Pieter Christiaan Joon (born February 4, 1942, Amsterdam) founded the World Organization Volleyball for Disabled (WOVD) in 1980 in the Netherlands. He was the president of this organization from 1980 to 2001. The General Assembly of the WOVD, in a meeting on 27 October 2001 in Slovenia, decided to award him the title of ''Honorary President''. Joon has been a board member of several different international sports organisations for the disabled. From 1980 to 1989 he was a board member of the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation (ISMGF). From 1981 to 1992 he was a board member of the International Sports Organisation for Disabled (ISOD). From 1981 to 1992 he was a member of the Technical Committee of the International Fund Sports Disabled. From 1984 to 1992 he was a member of the Technical Committee Paralympic Games.
