Veendam
Veendam () is a town and municipality with a population of 27,752 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. Veendam was established in 1648 as a peat colony by Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck. A Holland America Line cruise ship, the MS ''Veendam'', is named after the city. The municipality includes Westerdiepsterdallen, the smallest town in the Netherlands. SC Veendam
Sportclub Veendam () was a Dutch professional association football club based in Veendam, province of Groningen. Founded on 4 September 1894 as Look-Out, it became P.J. Veendam in 1909, Veendam in 1910, SC Veendam in 1974, BV Veendam in 1997 and again SC Veendam in 2011. The club was a founder member of the regional first tier Eerste Klasse Noord in 1916 and became champions of the division in 1931–32; it qualified for the national championship play-offs but finished in bottom place. Veendam took part in the inaugural season of the third tier Tweede Divisie in 1956–57; after yo-yoing between the third and second tiers, the team won promotion to the first tier Eredivisie for the first time in 1985–86. The side spent two seasons in the Eredivisie— 1986–87 and 1988–89—but were relegated both times. MS Veendam
MS Veendam is a cruise ship formerly operated by Holland America Line. Originally named ''Veendam'' after the municipality of Veendam in the Netherlands, she had been in Holland America Line service since 1996. In 2020 the vessel was sold to Seajets, Greece and renamed ''Aegean Majesty''. Holland America Line ''Aegean Majesty'' was built as ''Veendam'', the fourth S class/Statendam class ship, ordered following the success of her three sister ships. Her keel was laid by Fincantieri as Hull Number 5954 in 1994. The ship was launched on 24 June 1995 and completed in May 1996. Actress Debbie Reynolds became the ship's godmother, and sailed on her maiden voyage on 15 May 1996. Groningen (; gos, Grunn; fry, Grinslân) is the northeasternmost province of the Netherlands. Wildervank
Wildervank is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Veendam, about 3 km south of the centre of Veendam itself. It was founded in 1647 by Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck as a peat colony in the Wildervankster bog. Wildervank was a separate municipality until 1969, when the area was divided between Veendam and Stadskanaal. History The Wildervankster bog was a raised bog located to the west of Oude Pekela. Adriaan Geerts settled in Oude Pekela to study the exploitation of peat by the city of Groningen. The Wildevankster bog was still untouched, and Geerts wanted to purchase it. He bought the bog in 1647 in order to establish his own peat colony, but needed to procure a ƒ250,000 mortgage from an Amsterdam merchant. Geerts would later use the surname Wildervanck. Borgercompagnie
Borgercompagnie is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Groningen (province), Groningen. It consists of a single street with farms and houses on both sides. The village is about 7 km long. The north end lies close to Sappemeer in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, and the south end lies in the municipality of Veendam. The village was founded in 1647 by the Burger Compagnie (Citizen's Company) to exploit the peat. Borgercompagnie is a linear settlement along the canal. The northern section of the canal was filled up after 1940. In 2005, a manure fermentation factory opened in Borgercompagnie. It was originally hailed as a progressive company and received a stimulation prize. It processes 35,000 tons of manure a year, and is in ongoing dispute with their neighbours and the municipality of Veendam due to the stench. Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck
Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck (4 September 1605 – 24 November 1661) was a Dutch businessman and coloniser. In 1643, he lost most of his money when ''De Oevelgunne'' stranded on the Boschplaat with expensive lace. In 1647, he founded the Muntendammer Company to exploit a peat colony. As part of the colony, the villages of Wildervank (1647) and Veendam (1648) were established. Biography Adriaan Geerts was born on 4 September 1605 in Groningen, Netherlands. He had been active in Groningen as an accountant, and tenant of the council and winery of Groningen. In 1643, the ship ''De Oevelgunne'' was on route from England to Hamburg with expensive lace, but stranded on the Boschplaat in the Wadden Sea. The salvagers wanted their customary 1/3 share of the merchandise, however Geerts refused, because the ship had not been abandoned. The 2013 Energiewacht Tour is the third edition of the Energiewacht Tour women's cycling stage race. It is rated by the UCI as category 2.2, and is held between 3 and 7 April 2013 in the Netherlands. Westerdiepsterdallen
Westerdiepsterdallen is a hamlet, near Groningen. For a long time, it only had 1 inhabitant, when one of the houses was empty. By only having 1 inhabitant, it made it to the 1984 Guinness Book of Records. The hamlet has grown to 5 people. History Westerdiepsterdallen was an agricultural community. It used to have three houses, but one burned down in 1956. The fire department had difficulty finding the village, and arrived late. In 1975, one of the farms was squatted by Bonney Brattinga. After three years, he decided to buy the farm. The municipality tried to condemn the village, however Brattinga successfully protested the decision, and remained on his farm even though he had no gas or electricity, and used a water tank. In 1984, Westerdiepsterdallen made the Guinness Book of Records. The population has grown to five people, and nowadays has the same population as Breezanddijk. 2012 Energiewacht Tour
The 2012 Energiewacht Tour was the second edition of the Energiewacht Tour women's cycling stage race. It was rated by the UCI as category 2.2, and was held between 4 and 8 April 2012 in the Netherlands. The tour was won by Ina-Yoko Teutenberg ahead of Ellen van Dijk and Marianne Vos. Stages Stage 1 ;4 April 2012 – Appingedam to Appingedam (individual time trial), It was really cold for the time of the year. The individual time trial was, unsurprisingly, dominated by time trial specialists. Stage 2 ;5 April 2012 – Bad Nieuweschans to Bad Nieuweschans, Stage 2 started with the peloton being held up behind a level-crossing. The pace was kept high, with Rabobank doing a lot of work.
