Comarques Of Catalonia
This is a list of the 42 ''comarques'' (singular ''comarca'', , ) into which Catalonia is divided. A ''comarca'' is a group of municipalities, roughly equivalent to a county in the US or a district or council in the UK. However, in the context of Catalonia, the term "county" can be a bit misleading, because in medieval Catalonia, aside from the kings of Aragon, the most important rulers were counts, notably the Counts of Barcelona and of Urgell. Comarques have no particular relation to the "counties" that were ruled by counts. Ciutadilla
Ciutadilla is a village and municipality in the comarca of Urgell in Catalonia, Spain. Its population in 2013 was 209. The village, the only settlement in the municipality, is situated on a hill close to where the Montblanc-to-Tàrrega highway crosses the Corb river. Its ruined castle occupies a commanding position overlooking not just the village but also the plains of Urgell and Segarra. Many of the buildings in the village serve as holiday homes. Economy The municipality's economy depends largely on agriculture, mainly non-irrigated barley and other grains, vines, olives, and almonds, as well as pig- and poultry-farming. History Ciutadilla village developed around its castle, and spread downhill. The castle is mentioned in extant 12th-century documents, and was significantly improved in the 16th century. Tàrrega
Tàrrega is a town and municipality located in the Urgell comarca, Province of Lleida, Catalonia. According to the 2020 census (Statistical Institute of Catalonia), the town has a population of 17,445. The village has a Mediterranean climate with certain influences from the Continental climate. Local attractions include a park at Sant Eloi mountain () with a Romanesque church of the 13th century. Its theatre fair, held annually each September, attracts over 100,000 people a year. History Tàrrega's growth began in the 11th century, when Count Ramon Berenguer I conquered its castle. Located at a strategic crossroad, medieval Tàrrega became an important economic and territorial possession. Agramunt
Agramunt is a municipality (''municipi'') in the ''comarca'' of the Urgell in Catalonia. It is situated in the north of the ''comarca'', near the border with the Noguera. The town centre is protected as a historic-artistic monument, especially the Roman church of Santa Maria which dates from the 12th-13th centuries. The town is also known for the production of '' torró d'Agramunt'', a sort of confectionery traditionally eaten at Christmas. The town is linked to Tàrrega by the C-240 road, to Cervera by the L-303 road and to Artesa de Segre by the L-302 road. Bellpuig
Bellpuig () is a town in the ''comarca'' (county) of l'Urgell in Catalonia, Spain. Nowadays Bellpuig is the third most important town in the area of Urgell. The town, located between the three little hills appearing in the flag, is served by Bellpuig railway station. People Bellpuig in 1487 was the birthplace of Ramón de Cardona, Baron of Bellpuig, Count of Alvito and Duke of Somma (in Catalan Ramon Folc III de Cardona-Anglesola). He was a Catalan general of the Holy League troops and viceroy of Naples from 1509 to 1522. His funeral monument is in Bellpuig, where the body was transported nine years after his death on 10 March 1522. The monument was designed and built by Giovanni da Nola and Genoese master sculptors, it is one of the most important examples of Renaissance art in Spain. Verdú
Verdú is a village and municipality in the province of Lleida, in Catalonia, Spain. It is traditionally associated with the Segarra region, but in 1936 was transferred to the ''comarca'' of Urgell. The municipality covers 36 km2. The landscape consists of rolling hills with valleys and plains cultivated with grain, vineyards, and olive and almond trees. Small forests of pine and oak are scattered throughout the area. The Segarra-Garrigues canal and the Montblanc-Tàrrega highway both bisect the municipality, passing to the west of the town. Guimerà (Spanish: ''Guimerá'') is a municipality and village in the comarca of Urgell in the province of Lleida in Catalonia, Spain. The village, the only settlement in the municipality, is situated on the banks of the Corb river. The main part of the village is built up a hillside on the north bank of the river. The population in 2011 was 320. History Guimerà's development originated in the push by Christian forces from the north to recover the Iberian peninsula from Islam. It is believed the village is named after a Visigothic person named something like ''Wigmar'', who may have founded the settlement. Els Omells de na Gaia is a municipality in the ''comarca'' of the Urgell in Catalonia, Spain.
