Terrorism In Mexico
Terrorism in Mexico is the phenomenon of organized violence against civilians. It appeared in the 1960s, committed by communist guerrillas. Far-left groups From the late 1960s to the 1980s guerrilla movements operated in the country. The worst attacks were the assault of the Madera Cuartel and Tlatelolco Massacre, the starting point for several guerrilla movements, specially in the states of Guerrero and Ciudad de Mexico. Groups included Party of the Poor (Mexico), Partido de los Pobres, People's Guerrilla Group, or Liga Comunista 23 de Septiembre. These groups were demolished, amid allegations of extrajudicial executions or forced disappearances. Global Terrorism Database
The Global Terrorism Database (GTD) is a database of terrorist incidents from 1970 onward. As of May 2021, the list extended through 2019 recording over 200,000 incidents, although data from 1993 is excluded. The database is maintained by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland, College Park in the United States. It is also the basis for other terrorism-related measures, such as the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) published by the Institute for Economics and Peace. Data The GTD describe itself as the "most comprehensive unclassified data base on terrorist events in the world" and includes over 200,000 terrorist attacks in its 2021 version. Enrique Peña Nieto
Enrique Peña Nieto (; born 20 July 1966), commonly referred to by his initials EPN, is a Mexican politician who served as the 64th president of Mexico from 1 December 2012 to 30 November 2018. A member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), he previously served as Governor of the State of Mexico from 2005 to 2011, local deputy from 2003 to 2004, and Secretary of Administration from 2000 to 2002. Minatitlán Shooting
On the night of 19 April 2019 in the city of Minatitlán, Veracruz, Mexico, 14 people were killed, including a one-year-old baby, while they were celebrating a birthday party for a 52-year-old woman, when the assailants asked for "La Becky", the manager of a gay bar in Minatitlán and they started shooting. The Secretary of Security and Civilian Protection, Hugo Gutiérrez, assured that they had identified some of the participants in the attack, who began to be sought. Investigators believe the shootout was a result of a turf war between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and Los Zetas, two major criminal groups that operate in Veracruz. 2011 Monterrey Casino Attack
On August 25, 2011, members of drug cartel Los Zetas set a casino on fire in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, killing 52 people. The arson attack left over a dozen injured, and over 35 trapped for several hours before the Mexican forces arrived at the place minutes after the incident. Media reports state the majority of those killed were women, including one who was pregnant. Although the government crackdown of the drug cartels Mexican drug war, dates back to 2006, Monterrey became an increasingly violent city in 2010, due to the rupture of the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas. Surveillance footage shows vehicles with armed gunmen arriving at the entrance of Casino Royale. 2009 Guanajuato And Hidalgo Shootings
The 2009 Guanajuato and Hidalgo shootings were several shootouts that occurred on August 6, 2009 in Mexico between police and gunmen resulting in the seizure by police of 1.2 million pesos (more than $92,000), cocaine, assault rifles, police uniforms, bulletproof vests, handcuffs, hand grenades, and a variety of other military weapons. At the time of one of the incidents, Hidalgo state police had been searching for federal agents who had been reported missing. The federal agents were found in the Mineral de la Reforma municipality of Hidalgo alive and well. Acting on a tip, police stopped four trucks carrying the assailants, who opened fire on police and fled. Upon pursuing the suspects, a firefight erupted which lasted 20 minutes. 2008 Morelia Grenade Attacks
The Morelia grenade attacks took place on 15 September 2008 on the occasion of the Mexican Independence Day anniversary when thousands of people were gathered in the Plaza Melchor Ocampo, the main square of the Mexican city of Morelia, Michoacán. Shortly after the Grito in that city, led by Governor Leonel Godoy, two grenades were thrown into the crowds, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 100. The attacks The first blast was reported shortly after 23:00, on the Plaza itself, as the governor was intoning the traditional ''vivas'' to the heroes of the nation; the second took place some minutes later, in a sidestreet located four blocks away.
