Television in the United Arab Emirates began in 1969. Overview In 2011, the United Arab Emirates was the main headquarters to 72 free-to-air channels, falling slightly behind Egypt and Saudi Arabia in terms of the total number of channels within the Arab world. The United Arab Emirates also had 16 terrestrial channels, of which 13 are state-owned. Approximately 50% of viewers spend between one and three hours watching TV per day. Emirati nationals watch the highest amount of television, with 53% watching between three and six hours per day. Middle East Broadcasting Center, MBC channels are the most watched, particularly among expat Arabs, while Zee TV remains at the top among other expats due to the strong preponderance of South Asians in this group. Abu Dhabi TV is also a popular choice. IPTV penetration was estimated at 33% in 2011. MBC Group ( ar, مجموعة إم بي سي), is a Saudi media conglomerate based in the Middle East and North Africa region. Launched in London in 1991, the company moved to its headquarters to Dubai in 2002 then moved to Riyadh in 2022. MBC Group operates over 17 free-to-air satellite TV channels, and a video on demand service (Shahid). MBC was the first broadcaster to provide a satellite-based free-to-air 24-hour television broadcasting network across the Arab world. The Group's current chairman is Waleed bin Ibrahim Al Ibrahim. Abu Dhabi TV ( ar, قناة أبوظبي) is an Emirates-based television channel that was originally launched in 1969. It broadcasts content from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and is owned by Abu Dhabi Media. Abu Dhabi TV is managed by the Abu Dhabi Media. Drama TV ( ar, قناة دراما, ''Qanāt Drāmā''), formerly known as Abu Dhabi Drama ( ar, أبوظبي دراما, ''Abū Ẓabī Drāmā'') and sometimes referred to as AD Drama, was a Pan Arab television channel owned by Abu Dhabi Media. It programmed movies and television series. Programs were subtitled in Arabic. Quest Arabiya ( ar, عربية Quest) was a free-to-air pan-Arab television channel. The channel was launched on 7 December 2015 across the Middle East and North Africa region. It was the region's localized version of the Quest channel. The channel was owned by Discovery Communications in partnership with the Abu Dhabi-based Image Nation. Focusing primarily on factual and reality-based programming, Quest Arabiya broadcast for 24 hours a day and was expected to reach an estimated 45 million households across 22 countries. The channel was targeted toward a wide demographic of Arabic-speaking males and females while specifically targeting males 16+ at key times in the schedule. Dubai TV is a TV channel offered by the Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI). It replaced Emirates Dubai Television on June 14, 2004. Dubai TV broadcasts programmes predominantly in Arabic. The programming caters to family Arab audience specifically in the Arab World and is available in Australia, Europe, North America and the rest of Asia. Dubai One (formerly known as Ch33 and then One TV) is a Pan Arab English language entertainment television channel, owned by Dubai Media Incorporated. It was launched on 14 May 1994, and is currently managed by Sarah al Jarman. It airs a mix of locally produced and international syndicated content that caters both Arab and non-Arab viewers in the MENA region. It started broadcasting in HD on Nilesat 201 on 28 February 2019. Background Dubai One broadcasts subtitled Western content targeting Arabs and expatriates living in Dubai and around the Arab world. While most of the production is centralized at DMI's own studios, the channel has its own management, team, structure and strategy.
