Taree
Taree is a town on the Mid North Coast, New South Wales, Australia. Taree and nearby Cundletown were settled in 1831 by William Wynter. Since then Taree has grown to a population of 26,381, and is the centre of a significant agricultural district. It is 16 km from the Tasman Sea coast, and 317 km north of Sydney. Taree can be reached by train via the North Coast Railway, and by the Pacific Highway. Taree railway station is on the North Coast line of the NSW TrainLink network. It is serviced by six NSW TrainLink trains daily: three heading to Sydney, another three heading North to Grafton, Casino or Brisbane. Taree is within the local government area of Mid-Coast Council, the state electorate of Myall Lakes and the Federal electorate of Lyne. Pacific Highway (Australia)
Pacific Highway is a national highway and major transport route along the central east coast of Australia, with the majority of it being part of Australia's Highway 1. The highway and its adjoining Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and Brunswick Heads and Pacific Motorway between Sydney and Newcastle links the state capitals of Sydney in New South Wales with Brisbane in Queensland, approximately paralleling the Tasman Sea of the South Pacific Ocean coast, via Gosford, Newcastle, Taree, Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, and Ballina. Additionally, between Brunswick Heads and Port Macquarie (excepting for a short stretch around Coffs Harbour), the road is also signed as Pacific Motorway, but has not been legally gazetted as such. Pacific Highway no longer includes former sections of the highway between Brunswick Heads and Brisbane that have been legally renamed. Taree Railway Station
Taree railway station is located on the North Coast line in New South Wales, Australia. It serves the town of Taree, opening on 5 February 1913 when the line was extended from Dungog. It was the terminus of the line until it was extended to Wauchope on 12 April 1915. It had extensive locomotive servicing facilities, including an eight road roundhouse. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Platforms & services Taree has one platform with a yard opposite. Daily northbound XPT services operate to Grafton, Casino and Brisbane, with three southbound services operating to Sydney. It is also served by daily coach services to Broadmeadow. These coach services are operated by Busways as routes 150 and 151. Taree Airport
Taree Airport is an airport northeast of the city of Taree, New South Wales, Australia. Taree is on the Mid North Coast, less than a four-hour drive from Sydney. The airport no longer maintains any scheduled services. Airport facilities Taree is currently set to expand the airport to provide more facilities for pilots, businesses and airlines alike, This is also expected to boost the airports presence. A number of businesses including aircraft manufacturers and fabricators, an aircraft restorer and a skydiving school are based at Taree Airport. Airlines and destinations FlyPelican operated services between Taree and Sydney until July 2022, when removal of government grants and rising fuel prices made the service unviable. Martin Bridge
The Martin Bridge is a road bridge that carries the Manning River Drive across the Manning River in Taree, in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. In 2010 the bridge was added to New South Wales State Heritage Register. Description The Martin Bridge is a steel truss bridge of eleven spans, each long, on concrete supports, with three steel girder approach spans each long. The total bridge length is . Originally it had a lifting span with two concrete counterbalances. The bridge was opened on 18 May 1940 by the Premier of New South Wales, Alexander Mair, and replaced a steam-driven timber ferry service, in operation since 1902, located at the end of Pulteney Street (the redundant section of approach road on the southern bank of the Manning River leading to the ferry was renamed Old Punt Road). Wingham, New South Wales
Wingham is a town in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia in the Mid-Coast Council area north of Sydney. According to the , Wingham had a population of 5,313. History The first land grant in the area was made at The Bight to George Rowley in 1841. Wingham was chosen as a location for a government settlement because supply boats could not proceed any further up the Manning River and was also located on the road from Raymond Terrace to Port Macquarie. Named after Wingham in Kent, England, Wingham was proclaimed a village in 1844 but allotments were not made until 1854, the same year that Henry Flett laid out Taree as a private settlement. In the meantime, Tinonee had also been established as a government settlement and in 1866 had a population of 100, compared to 90 at Wingham and 150 at Taree. MidCoast Council is a local government area (LGA) located in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. The council was formed on 12 May 2016 through a merger of the Gloucester Shire, Great Lakes and City of Greater Taree councils. The council comprises an area of and occupies the southern portion of the Mid North Coast of New South Wales stretching between the coastal towns of and and northwards to Crowdy Bay National Park. Birpai
The Birrbay people, also spelt Birpai, Biripi, Birippi and variant spellings, are an Aboriginal Australian people of New South Wales. They and share a dialect continuum with the Worimi people. Language The Gathang language (aka Gadjang or Worimi) is the speech of the Birrbay centred in Port Macquarie. Birpai is spelt Biripi in southern areas, such as Taree. Gathang was a community language spoken by the six tribes of the Worimi when required to meet. W. J. Enright found four elderly speakers of Gathang at Wauchope in 1932. Country Birbay are the traditional owners of some of Mid North Coast land, from Gloucester eastwards to the coast where the Manning River debouches into the Pacific at Taree. North Coast Railway Line, New South Wales
The North Coast Line is the primary rail route in the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers regions of New South Wales, Australia, and forms a major part of the Sydney–Brisbane rail corridor. The line begins at Maitland and ends at Roma Street railway station in Brisbane, although freight services terminate at the yard at Acacia Ridge on the outskirts of Brisbane. Along the way, the railway passes through the towns of Dungog, Gloucester, Wingham, Taree, Kendall, Wauchope, Kempsey, Macksville, Nambucca Heads, Urunga, Sawtell, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, Casino and Kyogle. After the standard gauge line ends at Acacia Ridge, it forms a dual gauge line into Brisbane, running alongside parts of the Beenleigh railway line. Henry Flett
Henry Flett (1 April 1810 – 8 November 1877) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Caithness to farmer Henry Flett and Diana Stephens. He migrated to New South Wales around 1834 and farmed with William Stewart, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. In 1841 he married Mary Wynter, with whom he had ten children. He bought land on the Manning River, and bought the estate of Taree, where he founded the town. In 1859 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Hastings Hastings () is a large seaside town and borough in East Sussex on the south coast of England, east to the county town of Lewes and south east of London.
