The county was formed from sections of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Northampton and Pike County, Pennsylvania, Pike counties on April 1, 1836. Named in honor of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, the county is located in Northeastern Pennsylvania, along its border with New Jersey. James Monroe
James Monroe ( ; April 28, 1758July 4, 1831) was an American statesman, lawyer, diplomat, and Founding Father who served as the fifth president of the United States from 1817 to 1825.
