Lefkada (regional Unit)
Lefkada ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Λευκάδας) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the modern regions of Greece, region of Ionian Islands (region), Ionian Islands. The capital of the regional unit is the town of Lefkada (city), Lefkada. The regional unit consists of the islands of Lefkada, Meganisi, Kalamos (island), Kalamos, Kastos and several smaller islands, all in the Ionian Sea. Administration The regional unit Lefkada is subdivided into 2 municipalities. Ionian Sea
The Ionian Sea ( el, Ιόνιο Πέλαγος, ''Iónio Pélagos'' ; it, Mar Ionio ; al, Deti Jon ) is an elongated bay of the Mediterranean Sea. It is connected to the Adriatic Sea to the north, and is bounded by Southern Italy, including Calabria, Sicily, and the Salento peninsula to the west, southern Albania (and western Apulia, Italy) to the north, and the west coast of Greece, including the Peloponnese. Prefectures Of Greece
During the first administrative division of independent Greece in 1833–1836 and again from 1845 until their abolition with the Kallikratis reform in 2010, the prefectures ( el, νομοί, sing. νομός, translit=nomoi, sing. nomós) were the country's main administrative unit. They are now defunct, and have been approximately replaced by regional units. They are called departments in ISO 3166-2:GR and by the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names. The prefectures were the second-degree organization of local government, grouped into 13 regions or (before 1987) 10 geographical departments, and in turn divided into provinces and comprising a number of communities and municipalities. Sfakiotes
Sfakiotes ( el, Σφακιώτες) is a former municipality on the island of Lefkada, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Lefkada, of which it is a municipal unit. It is landlocked and located in the northern part of the island, just south of Lefkada. It has a land area of 30.494 km² and a population 1,377 (2011 census). The seat of the municipality was in the town of Lazarata (pop. 526). Other larger villages are Pinakochóri (214), Kávallos (180), Exántheia (pop. 170), and Spanochóri (161). The municipal name owes its origin to its first inhabitants who came from Sfakia and Chora Sfakion in the island of Crete. The municipal unit also features the Melissa gorge, one of the most beautiful points of interest on the island. Karya, Lefkada
Karya (Greek: Καρυά) is a former municipality on the island of Lefkada, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Lefkada, of which it is a municipal unit. It lies in the central part of Lefkada. It has a land area of 30.867 km2 and a population of 871 (2011 census). A large part of the population live in the former municipal seat, the town of Karyá (pop. 589). The village Karya is located on the slopes of ''Pyrgos'' at 500 m above sea level. The highest point in the municipal unit is the mountain Stavrota, elevation 1,158 m. There are four villages in the municipal unit: Karyá, Pigadisánoi (pop. 157), Egklouví (106), and Ammókampos (19). Ellomenos ( el, Ελλομένος) is a former municipality on the island of Lefkada, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Lefkada, of which it is a municipal unit. It is located in the southeastern part of the island, and has a land area of 56.017 km². Its population was 3,570 at the 2011 census. The seat of the municipality was in the town of Nydri (pop. 971). Its next largest towns are Vlychó (440), Perigiáli (315), and Kallithéa (428). Apollonioi
Apollonioi ( el, Απολλώνιοι) is a former municipality on the island of Lefkada, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Lefkada, of which it is a municipal unit. It is located in the southwestern part of the island. Its population was 2,768 at the 2011 census. The seat of the municipality was in Vasiliki (pop. 395). Its area is 124.709 km², comprising about 41 percent of Lefkada Island. Its largest towns are Ágios Pétros (pop. 422), Vasilikí, Sývros (379), and Marantochóri (330). The area features beautiful beaches on the western side of the island, the most famous are in Porto Katsiki and in Ekremnoi. The Porto Katsiki Beach has been voted the second best beach in the world.
