Jason Kander
Jason David Kander (born May 4, 1981) is an American attorney, author, veteran, and politician. A Democrat, he served as the 39th secretary of state of Missouri, from 2013 to 2017. He had previously served as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 2009 to 2013. Before entering politics, he was an intelligence officer in the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of captain. He was the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate for Missouri in 2016, narrowly losing the election to Republican incumbent Roy Blunt. After the Senate election, Kander founded an organization called Let America Vote, a campaign dedicated to ending voter suppression. He declared as a candidate in the 2019 Kansas City mayoral election, but dropped out on October 2, 2018, after revealing that he suffered from PTSD and depression. 2019 Kansas City Mayoral Election
The 2019 Kansas City mayoral election took place on June 18, 2019, to elect the next Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. The election was held concurrently with various other local elections, and was officially nonpartisan. Incumbent mayor Sly James, in office since 2011, was term-limited and could not seek the office again. In the nonpartisan primary held on April 2, 2019, city council members Jolie Justus and Quinton Lucas were the top-two vote winners with 23 and 18 percent of the vote, respectively. Voter suppression is a strategy used to influence the outcome of an election by discouraging or preventing specific groups of people from voting. Let America Vote
Let America Vote is a political action organization founded by former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander in February 2017. Its mission is to end voter suppression across the country. Overview Kander first became concerned about voter suppression during his tenure as Missouri Secretary of State, when the Republican-dominated state legislature proposed photo identification laws that could prevent as many as 200,000 eligible voters from voting. Kander founded Let America Vote three months after he had narrowly lost to Roy Blunt in the 2016 Senate race. Responding to the actions taken by the Trump administration (such as the Voter Fraud Commission), Let America Vote aims to create political consequences for politicians intent on denying certain Americans the right to vote, especially those that target low-income and minority voters. Roy Blunt
Roy Dean Blunt (born January 10, 1950) is an American politician serving as the senior United States senator for Missouri, a seat he was first elected to in 2010. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the 33rd Missouri Secretary of State (1985–1993) and U.S. Representative for Missouri's 7th congressional district (1997–2011). Born in Niangua, Missouri, Blunt is a graduate of Southwest Baptist University and Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University).
