Indian Open (snooker)
The Indian Open is a professional ranking snooker tournament. Matthew Selt is the reigning champion. History The event was introduced in the 2013/2014 season and it is the first ever ranking event to be held in India. The inaugural event was held between 14 and 18 October 2013 at the Le Meridian Hotel in New Delhi. The Billiards and Snooker Federation of India has signed a three-year contract for the tournament. In August 2014, it was announced that the event will be held at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai. In September 2014, it was announced that the event has been postponed due to the State Election in Maharashtra, with the original dates of 13–17 October 2014 changed to 10–14 March 2015. The qualifying round held at the Barnsley Metrodome in Barnsley was due to take place from 18 to 21 September 2014 and has been moved to 12–13 February 2015. Snooker Season 2016/2017
Snooker (pronounced , ) is a cue sport played on a rectangular table covered with a green cloth called baize, with six pockets, one at each corner and one in the middle of each long side. The 2017 Indian Open was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place between 12 and 16 September 2017 in Vishakhapatnam, India. It was the fourth ranking event of the 2017/2018 season. Qualifying took place between 1–2 August 2017 in Preston, England. Anthony McGill was the defending champion, having beaten Kyren Wilson 5–2 in the 2016 final. McGill reached the final again but was beaten by John Higgins, who won his 29th ranking event. Kyren Wilson
Kyren Wilson (; born 23 December 1991) is an English professional snooker player from Kettering and a five-time ranking event winner. He has been a runner-up at two of the three Triple Crown events, having reached the final at both the 2018 Masters and the 2020 World Snooker Championship. Wilson reached his highest world ranking of fourth in 2020. A prolific breakbuilder, Wilson has made over 350 century breaks and a maximum break on three occasions. Wilson turned professional in 2010 after finishing fifth in the 2009–2010 International Open Series rankings. After failing to retain his spot on the World Snooker Tour in 2011, he regained his tour card in 2013 and has been a professional ever since. Anthony McGill
Anthony McGill (born 5 February 1991) is a Scottish professional snooker player. He is a practice partner of retired snooker player Alan McManus. McGill turned professional in 2010, after finishing fourth in the 2009/2010 PIOS rankings. He won the 2016 Indian Open, after having previously never been beyond the quarter-final stage of a ranking event. Career Amateur years He was runner-up to Stuart Carrington in the 2006 Junior Pot Black. He was runner-up in the 2008 European Under-19's Championship behind Stephen Craigie. In the 2009/2010 season, he won the fifth event of the International Open Series and finished fourth in the rankings. Thus, McGill received a place on the professional main tour for 2010/2011. The 2016 Indian Open was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place between 5–9 July 2016 at the HICC Novotel Hotel in Hyderabad, India. It was the second ranking event of the 2016/2017 season. Hyderabad hosted the event for the first time, the previous venue being Grand Hyatt in Mumbai. Michael White was the defending champion, but he lost 1–4 against Anthony Hamilton in the held over qualifying round. Ricky Walden
Ricky Walden (born 11 November 1982) is an English professional snooker player from Chester. Walden turned professional in 2000 and it took him eight years to win his first ranking title at the Shanghai Masters. He has since won the 2012 Wuxi Classic and the 2014 International Championship and has been inside the top 16 in the season-ending rankings on four occasions. A former world Top 6 player, Walden has reached the televised stages of the World Snooker Championship on eight occasions as of 2021, with his best result being a semi-finalist in 2013. Early years Walden was born in Chester but raised in Bagillt, North Wales, where he now lives once more, having spent some time living elsewhere in Flintshire. Michael White (snooker Player)
Michael White (born 5 July 1991) is a Welsh professional snooker player from Neath, Glamorgan. Nicknamed ‘Lightning’ due to his fast playing style, White is a former top 16 player and two-time ranking event winner. A highly rated junior, he became the youngest player to have made a century break in competitive play aged 9, and won the World Amateur Championship at 14. White won his first ranking event at the 2015 Indian Open, before breaking into the top 16 during the 2015-16 season and capturing his second ranking title at the 2017 Paul Hunter Classic. White's form started to decline in the 2018-19 season however, eventually leading to him dropping off the professional tour in 2020. The 2015 Indian Open was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place between 10 and 14 March 2015 at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai, India. The tournament was originally scheduled for 13–17 October 2014, but was postponed until March due to the State Election in Maharashtra. Mumbai played host to the tournament for the first time, having previously being held at the Le Meridien Hotel in New Delhi. Aditya Mehta
Aditya Mehta (born 31 October 1985 in Mumbai, India) is an Indian former professional snooker player. He participated on the World Snooker Tour for the 2007–08 season, and between 2011 and 2018. He reached a highest world ranking of 49. Mehta participated in the final of ranking event for the first time at the 2013 Indian Open where he played Ding Junhui, but lost 0–5. Mehta has several medals at the Asian and World Games. He won the gold at the men's event at the 2013 World Games, and the team event at the 2009 Asian Games. Ding Junhui
Ding Junhui (; born 1 April 1987) is a Chinese professional snooker player. He is the most successful Asian player in the history of the sport. Throughout his career, he has won 14 major ranking titles, including three UK Championships (2005, 2009, 2019). He has twice reached the final of the Masters, winning once in 2011. In 2016, he became the first Asian player to reach the final of the World Championship.
