Frogn
Frogn is a municipality in former Akershus now Viken county, Norway. It is part of the Follo traditional region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Drøbak. Frogn was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The city of Drøbak was merged with Frogn on 1 January 1962. Frogn is located at the southern part of the peninsula between the main Oslofjord and Bunnefjorden. It borders Nesodden, Ås and Vestby. General information Name The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old ''Frogn'' farm (Old Norse: ''Fraun''), since the first church was built here. The name must be very old and the meaning is unknown. One theory is that it is derived from the Norse word ''frauð'' which means "manure" and the meaning would then be "the fertilized field". Frogner
Frogner is a residential and retail borough in the West End of Oslo, Norway, with a population of 59,269 as of 2020. In addition to the original Frogner, the borough incorporates Bygdøy, Uranienborg and Majorstuen. The borough is named after Frogner Manor, and includes Frogner Park. The borough has the highest real estate prices in Norway. Etymology The borough is named after the old Frogner Manor. The Norse form of the name was ''Fraunar'' (plural form), and is likely derived from the word ''frauð'' 'manure' — meaning 'fertilized fields'. (See also Frogn and Tøyen.) English-speaking foreigners may assume the word “Frogner” to be related to the English word frog but these words are not congnates. The word for “frog” in Norwegian is “frosk”. Drøbak
Drøbak is a List of cities in Norway, town and the centre of the municipality of Frogn, in Viken county, Norway. The city is located along the Oslofjord, and has 13,409 inhabitants. History Drøbak and Frogn was established as a parish on its own through a royal decree on 8 September 1823. It had been a part of Ås parish. Drøbak was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). It was merged with Frogn on 1 January 1962. Traditionally, Drøbak was the winter harbour of Norway's capital, Oslo, since in severe winters the fjord will freeze from outside Drøbak all the way up to Oslo. It had city status between 1842 and 1962, upon which point the municipality was merged into the rural municipality Frogn and lost its city status. Jens Carl Peter Brandt
Jens Carl Peter Brandt (20 June 1848 – 10 August 1912) was a Norwegian lawyer, property owner and politician with the Conservative Party. He was born on the Froen farm of Frogn parish (''Froen gård i Frogn'') in Akershus, Norway. He was the son of Captain Ole Peter Brandt (1793-1875) and his second wife Mathilde Kristine Brandt. Members of this family still own this property. He finished his secondary education in 1865 and graduated with the cand.jur. degree in 1869. He then worked six years as an attorney, before taking over his family manor in 1875. In addition to a farm, the estate had a mill, a sawmill, a planing mill and a brickworks. He was also among the co-founders of the local savings bank, Frogn sparebank, in 1884 and was chairman of the board. Brandt was a member of Frogn municipal council from 1884 to 1912, serving as mayor from 1884 to 1895. Akershus
Akershus () is a traditional region and current electoral district in Norway, with Oslo as its main city and traditional capital. It is named after the Akershus Fortress in Oslo. From the middle ages to 1919, Akershus was a fief and main county that included most of Eastern Norway, and from the 17th century until 2020, Akershus also had a more narrow meaning as a (sub) county that included most of the Greater Oslo Region. Follo, Norway
Follo (old spelling Foldouge) is one of three traditional and judicional districts in the former fylke (county) of Akershus, Norway - south east of Oslo towards the former county of Østfold, the other two regions being Romerike (east of Oslo following european route E6 going east and then north in Norway) and Asker og Bærum (west of Oslo). Follo borders Oslo to the North-West, fellow Akershus district Romerike to the North-East and East, and Østfold to the south. The municipalities of Frogn and Vestby have coast lines along the Oslofjord. Oscarsborg Fortress
Oscarsborg Fortress ( no, Oscarsborg festning) is a coastal fortress in the Oslofjord, close to the small town of Drøbak in Viken county, Norway. The best known part is situated on two small islets. The main artillery batteries are on the island Håøya and smaller batteries on the mainland to the west and east in the fjord and was military territory until 2003 when it was made a publicly available resort island. The fortress is best known for sinking the German heavy cruiser '' Blücher'' on 9 April 1940. In 2014, Oscarsborg Fortress was given protected status. Early history The narrows at Drøbak, called '' Drøbaksundet'', is a natural point for the naval defence of Oslo, the capital of Norway. Niels Carlsen
Niels Carlsen (8 January 1734 – 3 May 1809) was a Norwegian timber merchant, landowner, shipowner and banker. Carlsen was one of the biggest ship owners in Norway of his time. Career Carlsen was born in Drøbak in Akershus, Norway. He was the son of Jacob Carlsen (ca. 1685-1749) and Maria Jørgensdatter Frost. His father had married the widow of his employer and took over the trading business. Drøbak had a favorable location situated on east side of Drøbak Sound, at the narrowest part of the Oslo Fjord. It was near the capital, had good anchoring and mooring facilities and a protective harbor. Niels Carlsen and his half brothers Christian went into their father's business and expanded it. Viken (county)
Viken is a county under disestablishment in Eastern Norway that was established on 1 January 2020 by the merger of Akershus, Buskerud and Østfold with the addition of three other municipalities. Viken was controversial from the onset, with an approval rating of about 20% in the region, and the merger was resisted by all the three counties. Viken has been compared to gerrymandering. The county executive of Viken determined in 2019, before the merger had taken effect, that the county's disestablishment is its main political goal, and the formal process to dissolve Viken was initiated by the county executive in right after the 2021 Norwegian parliamentary election in which parties seeking to reverse the merger won a majority. Carl Julius Evensen
Carl Julius Evensen (3 December 1851 – 3 October 1937) was a Norwegian shipmaster and explorer. Cape Evensen on the northwest coast of Antarctica and Evensen Nunatak, off the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, were named in his honor. Biography He was born at Drøbak in Akershus, Norway. He was a ship captain and resided in between Oslo and Sandefjord. He explored the Antarctic together with Carl Anton Larsen among others, and in 1893 he reached the Antarctic Peninsula on board the barque ''Hertha''. Personal life Carl Julius Evensen was married to Severine Marie Jensen in 1879. Carl and Severine had eight children in all, most emigrated to the United States. He died at Brooklyn, New York. Formannskapsdistrikt
() is the name for Norwegian local self-government districts that were legally enacted on 1 January 1838. This system of municipalities was created in a bill approved by the Parliament of Norway and signed into law by King Carl Johan on 14 January 1837. The ''formannskaps'' law, which fulfilled an express requirement of the Constitution of Norway, required that every parish ( no, prestegjeld) form a ''formannsskapsdistrikt'' (municipality) on 1 January 1838.
