Cyrk (art)
Cyrk - contemporary Polish circus posters, emerged in 1962 as a genre of the Polish School of Posters. They are characterized by their display of aesthetic qualities such as painterly gestures, linear design, hand-lettering, metaphors, humor, and vibrant colors. Usually based on a single theme and meant to be advertisements; they were created in an attempt to interest the passerby in the upcoming circus. Henryk Tomaszewski (poster Artist)
Henryk Tomaszewski (pronounced tom-a-SHEV-ski) (June 10, 1914 – September 11, 2005) was an award-winning poster artist and the "father" of the Polish Poster School. Biography Henryk Tomaszewski was born in Warsaw, Poland on June 10, 1914, to a family of musicians. In 1934, he enrolled in the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1939. During World War II and the Nazi occupation of Poland, Tomaszewski earned a living through his painting, drawings, and woodcuts which were later destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising. In 1947, he began creating posters for state-run film distribution agency Central Wynajmu Filmow with fellow designers Tadeusz Trepkowski and Tadeusz Gronowski. Postwar shortages of supplies made Tomaszewski rework film posters and introduced bold colors, abstract shapes, and filmmaking techniques to convey the film's mood rather than rely on portraits of the film's stars. Waldemar Świerzy
Waldemar Świerzy ( 1931 – 27 November 2013) was a Polish artist. Life Born in Katowice, Poland, he graduated from the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts in 1952. He was subsequently Professor in the University of Fine Arts in Poznań from 1965 and Professor in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1994. In 1992 the government of Poland issued a postage stamp to honor one of his Cyrk posters, 'Clown with derby'. Swierzy is one of the Polish School of Posters' most prolific artists, having created over 2500 posters. He employed unusual concepts with a variety of techniques, frequently mirroring Polish social history from 1950s through 1980s, with a myriad of styles: folk art from the 50s, pop art from the 60s, portraits from the 70s, and TV images from the 80s. In addition, his Jazz Greats series of famous American jazz personalities became so well known that he reissued them in his later years as signed lithographs. Jan Lenica
Jan Lenica (4 January 1928, Poznań, Poland – 5 October 2001, Berlin) was a Polish graphic designer and cartoonist. A graduate of the Architecture Department of Warsaw Polytechnic, Lenica became a poster illustrator and a collaborator on the early animation films of Walerian Borowczyk. From 1963 – 1986 he lived and worked in France, while from 1987 he lived and worked in Berlin. He was a professor of graphic, poster, animated cartoon for many years at German high schools and the first professor of the animation class at the University of Kassel, Germany, in 1979. He used cut-out stop motion animation in his numerous films, which included two features: '' Adam 2'' (1968) and ''Ubu et la grande gidouille'' (1976, but released in France only in 1979). Jan Sawka
Jan Sawka (December 10, 1946 – August 9, 2012) was a Polish-born American artist and architect. Early life In 1946, Sawka was born to an architect father and linguist mother, Jan and Maria Sawka, in the Silesian city of Zabrze. His father was imprisoned by the government of Communist Poland shortly after his birth. His mother was not allowed to pursue her career, but worked privately as a tutor. Sawka completed two master's degrees: in painting and print-making from the Wrocław Fine Arts Academy and in Architectural Engineering from the Institute of Technology in Wrocław. By his late 20s, Sawka was a star of the famed Polish Poster School and a leading artist of the counter-culture. Rafał Olbiński
Rafał Olbinski (born February 21, 1943) is a Polish illustrator, painter, and educator, living in the United States. He is considered one of the major representatives of the Polish School of Posters. Biography Olbinski was born in Kielce, Poland. He graduated from the architecture program of the Warsaw University of Technology in 1969. Career Olbinski immigrated to the United States in 1981, where he soon established himself as a prominent painter, illustrator and designer. Olbinski's work is very similar to the work of the famous Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte; Olbinski describes his approach to painting and illustrating as "poetic surrealism". He has cited his influences as "everybody", specifically Saul Steinberg, Milton Glaser, Marshall Arisman and Brad Holland. Wiesław Wałkuski
Wiesław Wałkuski is a graphic designer born in Poland. Today he is much exhibited and works as a freelancer painter and poster artist. Biography Wiesław Wałkuski was born in 1956 in Białystok, Poland. He started his graphic design education at the Warsaw Academy of Art which he attended for 5 years, during the period 1976–1981. He studied under several design lecturers including Maciej Urbaniec who lectured in poster design and Teresa Pągowska who lectured in painting. At the end of his studies he was employed by Polfilm and Film Polski to produce artwork and cover designs. Maciej Urbaniec
Maciej Urbaniec (1 September 1925 – 19 May 2004) was a Polish artist, graphic designer, poster artist. He was one of the pioneers of the Polish Poster School. Early life Urbaniec's father, John Zdzieblan-Urbaniec, was a diplomat. His first mentor was the sculptor Alfons Karny. His drawing teacher was Zygmunt Kamiński, who designed the Polish Coat of Arms. Franciszek Starowieyski
Franciszek Andrzej Bobola Biberstein-Starowieyski (8 July 1930 in Bratkówka – 23 February 2009 in Warsaw) was a Polish artist. From 1949 to 1955, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and Warsaw. He specialized in poster, drawing, painting, stage designing, and book illustration. He was a member of Alliance Graphique International (AGI). Throughout his career his style deviated from the socialist realism that was prevalent during the start of his career and the popular, brightly colored Cyrk posters; however he did create one Cyrk poster ''Homage to Picasso'' in 1966. He was the first Polish artist to have a one-man show at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, in 1986.
