Cycling At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's Keirin
The women's Keirin at the 2012 Olympic Games in London took place at the London Velopark on 3 August. Women's Keirin made its debut in this Olympics. Great Britain's Victoria Pendleton won the gold medal. Guo Shuang from China won silver and Lee Wai Sze took bronze for Hong Kong's only medal of the 2012 Games. Competition format The Keirin races involved 5.5 laps of the track behind a motorcycle, followed by a 2.5 lap sprint to the finish. The tournament consisted of preliminary heats and repechages, a semi-finals round, and the finals. The heats and repechages narrowed the field to 12. The semi-finals divided the remaining 12 into six finalists. The finals round also included a ranking race for 7th to 12th place. London Velopark
Lee Valley VeloPark is a cycling centre on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London, England. It is owned and managed by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, and it was opened to the public in March 2014. The facility was one of the permanent venues for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Lee Valley VeloPark is at the northern end of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It has a velodrome and BMX racing track, which have been used for the Games, as well as a one-mile (1.6 km) road course and 5 miles (8 km) of mountain bike trails. The park replaces the Eastway Cycle Circuit demolished to make way for it. The facilities built for the Olympics were constructed between 2009 and 2011. Juliana Gaviria Rendon (born 31 March 1991) is a Colombian track cyclist, born in La Ceja. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in the Women's team sprint, women's keirin, and Women's sprint. Simona Krupeckaitė (born 13 December 1982) is a Lithuanian former professional track cyclist. She is the 2009 500 m Time Trial World Champion and World Record holder at 33.296s, and the 2010 Keirin World Champion. She also won the 2009, 2010 and 2016 Lithuanian Sportsperson of the Year award. In 2010 Krupeckaitė reached one more world record. This time she achieved 10.793 s record at Flying 200 m time trial event. Fatehah Mustapa (born 12 March 1989 in Terengganu) is a retired Malaysian track cyclist. She competed in the keirin race at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she placed 15th. Natasha Hansen
Natasha Hansen (born 15 November 1989) is a New Zealand track cyclist who has represented her country at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. Hansen competed at the 2018 Gold Coast games and won two silver medals in the sprint & team sprint, and a bronze in the keirin. Early life Hansen was born in 1989 in Takapuna on Auckland's North Shore and is of Samoan descent. She grew up in Canterbury and played netball and was in the Canterbury Flames wider squad, including trials at the national secondary level. Her motivation for taking up track cycling during secondary school was to increase her fitness for netball. Career At her second national trials, she set new national records in sprint and 500 m, which qualified her for the 2007 UCI Juniors World Championships held in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
