Cycling At The 1948 Summer Olympics
The cycling competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London consisted of two road cycling events and four track cycling events, all for men only. The track cycling events were held at the Herne Hill Velodrome in south London. The road race events were held in Windsor Great Park, south of Windsor. Windsor Great Park
Windsor Great Park is a Royal Park of , including a deer park, to the south of the town of Windsor on the border of Berkshire and Surrey in England. It is adjacent to the private Home Park, which is nearer the castle. The park was, for many centuries, the private hunting ground of Windsor Castle and dates primarily from the mid-13th century. Historically the park covered an area many times the current size known as Windsor Forest, Windsor Royal Park or its current name. The only royal park not managed by The Royal Parks, the park is managed and funded by the Crown Estate. Most parts of the park are open to the public, free of charge, from dawn to dusk, although there is a charge to enter Savill Garden. Gordon Thomas (cyclist)
Gordon W. "Tiny" Thomas (18 August 1921 – 10 April 2013) was a British cyclist who competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. There he won a silver medal in the team road race alongside Bob Maitland and Ian Scott. He also competed in the individual event, finishing 8th in a field of 101 participants. Born in Shipley, West Riding of Yorkshire, he served during World War II with the Royal Artillery in Africa and Italy. Robert Geldard
Robert Alan Geldard (16 April 1927 – 26 February 2018) was a British cyclist. Early life He was born in Rochdale, Lancashire. He left school at 14 and began to train as a commercial artist. As the Second World War was underway, at 17 he was recruited as a Bevin Boy (meaning that he was conscripted to work as a miner) which he continued until the start of 1948, when he returned to work as a commercial artist. Cycling career After the War, rationing was still a fact of life, but being a member of the 1948 Olympic squad, he received extra monthly food parcels which had been donated by the British Empire nations. He won a bronze medal in the team pursuit at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, together with David Ricketts, Tommy Godwin and Wilfred Waters. The team had to provide their own equipment. Wilfred Waters
Wilfred Waters (4 January 1923 – 2006), or sometimes referred to as Wilfrid Waters, was a British racing cyclist, one of the top British riders in the 1940s. A member of the South London RC, he competed at many national track events including the Grand Prix of the City of Manchester, where he rode against Reg Harris amongst others. There he also paired up with R Waters to finish third in the madison. Based on his successes, Waters was selected to compete at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Waters won the bronze medal as a member of the British team pursuit squad at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Other team pursuit squad members were Robert Geldard, Tommy Godwin and David Ricketts. In 1950, Waters became the 880 yards Scottish Grass Track Champion. Waters died in early 2006 at the age of 83 in Surrey, England.
