Curragh Stakes
The Curragh Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in Ireland open to two-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. History The event was first run in 1932, run as The Curragh Foal Plate until 1956 and The Curragh Foal Stakes in 1957 and 1958. It was classed at Group 3 level in 1971. For a period it was usually staged in July. It was discontinued after 1996. The Curragh Stakes was revived in 2008, and from this point it held Listed status. It became known as the Grangecon Stud Stakes in 2009. It was switched to August in 2010, and reverted to its former title in 2011. The race was upgraded to Group 3 in 2015 and downgraded back to Listed status in 2018. Curragh Racecourse
The Curragh Racecourse -- usually referred to as simply the Curragh -- is one of Ireland's most important Thoroughbred racecourses. It is situated on the Curragh plain in County Kildare, between the towns of Newbridge and Kildare. History The name "Curragh" comes from the Irish language word ''Cuirreach'', meaning "place of the running horse". The first recorded race on the plain took place in 1727, but it was used for races before then. The first Derby was held in 1866, and in 1868 the Curragh was officially declared a horse racing and training facility by act of parliament. Racecourse redevelopment Redevelopment of the Curragh grandstand and racecourse facilities began in 2017 with completion due in time for commencement of the 2019 Irish Flat season. Pat Eddery
Patrick James John Eddery (18 March 1952 – 10 November 2015) was an Irish flat racing jockey and trainer. He rode three winners of the Derby and was Champion Jockey on eleven occasions. He rode the winners of 4,632 British flat races, a figure exceeded only by Sir Gordon Richards. Background Eddery was born in Newbridge, County Kildare, less than 2 miles from the Curragh Racecourse, and his birth was registered in Dublin. He was the fifth child of Jimmy Eddery, a jockey who rode Panaslipper to win the Irish Derby in 1955, and Josephine (the daughter of jockey Jack Moylan). His brother, Paul, also went on to become a jockey. Millisle (horse)
Millisle (foaled 11 May 2017) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2019 she was the best filly of her age in Europe, winning three races including the Curragh Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes as well as finishing second in the Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes and ending the season with a rating of 115. She was less successful as a three-year-old but added another major win when taking the Ballyogan Stakes. Background Millisle is a chestnut filly with a white blaze and two white socks bred and owned by the Newtownards-based Stonethorn Stud Farms. The filly was sent into training with Jessica Harrington at Moone, County Kildare. The filly is named after Millisle, a village in County Down. Jessica Harrington
Jessica Jane Harrington (née Fowler, born 12 February 1947) is an Irish professional horse trainer. Harrington specialises in National Hunt racing but has also had success in Flat racing. Personal life Harrington was born in London. Her father was Brigadier Bryan Fowler, an officer in the British Army, and her mother was Mary Walford. Bryan Fowler was originally from Kells, County Meath and served with the Royal Artillery in both World Wars, and married Mary, who was a widow, in 1944. She had two children from her previous marriage. Harrington had an older brother, John Fowler, who was also a racehorse trainer and died in an accident in 2008 at their family estate in Summerhill, County Meath. Colm O'Donoghue
Colm O'Donoghue (born 13 November 1980, Buttevant, County Cork, Ireland) is a multiple Group 1 and Classic winning flat jockey. For most of his career, he was based at the Ballydoyle racing stables in Rosegreen, Cashel, County Tipperary. Career In his final days as a schoolboy in 1996, O'Donoghue rang Aidan O'Brien to ask to be his apprentice. O'Brien agreed. The association continued for two decades. O'Donoghue rode his first winner, My Lorraine, at Sligo in 1997. Wayne Lordan
Wayne Lordan is a multiple Group race winning Irish jockey. His first winner was Ethbaat for trainer Gerry Cully at Killarney on 15 July 1998. In his early career he was associated with the stables of David Wachman and Tommy Stack. He also rode occasionally for Eddie Lynam. It was for Lynam he won his first Group 1 on the unfancied Sole Power in the 2010 Nunthorpe Stakes at York. At 100/1, the horse was the longest priced winner of a British Group 1 for 35 years. Another horse owned by the Power bookmaking family, Slade Power, and also trained by Lynam gave him even greater success, winning three Group 1 sprints over the course of 2013 and 2014 - the British Champions Sprint Stakes, the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and the July Cup. Kevin Manning (jockey)
Kevin James Manning (born March 1967) is an Irish flat racing jockey. Manning rides principally for the stable of Jim Bolger. He has won both the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby. Manning was champion flat racing apprentice jockey in Ireland on two accessions and was appointed as stable jockey to Jim Bolger in 1993. Manning won his first Group 1 race on Eva Luna in the 1994 Phoenix Stakes and his first classic race victory came in the 2002 Irish Oaks on Margarula. He has since won major races in Ireland, Britain, France and Hong Kong, notably on the filly Alexander Goldrun who won 5 Group 1 races . David Wachman
David Wachman (born 5 July 1971) is a retired Irish racehorse trainer who specialised in flat racing. Before taking out his own licence to train horses, Wachman worked for trainers in Ireland (Jessica Harrington, Michael Hourigan and Jim Bolger), Australia (Bill Mitchell and Brian Mayfield Smith) and England (Jenny Pitman). He began training near Carrick-on-Suir at the age of 25 with runners in point-to-point races and had his first winner in 1996 with Middle Mogs in a hurdle race at Clonmel, followed by his first flat race winner in June 1997 with Clewbay Pearl at Cork. In 2002 Wachman married Kate Magnier, daughter of breeder John Magnier, and moved to a stables near Cashel. Johnny Murtagh
Johnny Murtagh (born 14 May 1970) is an Irish flat racing trainer and former jockey from Bohermeen, near Navan, Kells, County Meath. As a jockey he won many of the major flat races in Europe, including all the Irish Classics, all the Group 1 Races at Royal Ascot, The Derby, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and Europe's biggest race the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Kevin Darley
Kevin Darley (born 5 August 1960, in Penn, Wolverhampton) is a retired jockey, and a co-president of the Jockeys' Association of Great Britain. He was British flat racing Champion Apprentice in 1978 with 70 wins and Champion Jockey in 2000 with 155 wins. He also won the Lester Award for Flat Jockey of the Year in 2000, and won the Lester Special Recognition Award in 1997 and 2007. He was associated with a number of trainers including Mark Johnston, for whom he won the English 1,000 Guineas, Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes on Attraction. Mark Johnston (racehorse Trainer)
Mark Johnston (born 10 October 1959) is a Scottish racehorse trainer based in Middleham, North Yorkshire, England. Born in Glasgow, he studied at the University of Glasgow and is a qualified vet. He started training at a stable near Louth, Lincolnshire in 1987, and his first winner was Hinari Video at Carlisle He has been training in Middleham since 1988 when he purchased Kingsley House (often falsely attributed to be the former home of Charles Kingsley, author of '' The Water Babies''). Lanfranco Dettori (; born 15 December 1970), better known as Frankie Dettori, is an Italian horse racing jockey based in the United Kingdom. Dettori has been British flat racing Champion Jockey three times and has ridden the winners of more than 500 Group races. This includes 20 winners of the English classics. His most celebrated achievement was riding all seven winners on British Champions' Day at Ascot Racecourse in 1996.
