Curlew (sailboat)
The Tartan 27 Yawl is an American trailerable sailboat that was designed by Sparkman & Stephens as a cruiser and first built in 1961. The Tartan 27 Yawl is a development of the Tartan 27 sloop, with a shorter main mast and the addition of a mizzen mast with a sail of mounted in the lazarette. The Tartan 27 series was developed into the Tartan 27-2 in 1976. Darrell Nicholson of ''Practical Sailor'', noted of the Tartan 27 Yawl, "a small number of 27s, for what we assume was quaintness rather than any practical reason, were rigged as yawls with handkerchief-sized mizzens on a mast stepped into the lazarette." Production Production was initially by Douglass & McLeod at their Grand River, Ohio factory, starting in 1961 and ending in 1971 when the plant burned down. Robert Manry
Robert Manry (June 2, 1918 – February 21, 1971) was a copy editor of the Cleveland ''Plain Dealer'' who in 1965 sailed from Falmouth, Massachusetts, to Falmouth, Cornwall, England, in a tiny sailboat (an Old Town "Whitecap" built by the Old Town Canoe Co. of Old Town, Maine, which he had extensively modified for the voyage) named ''Tinkerbelle''. Beginning on June 1, 1965, and ending on August 17, the voyage lasted 78 days. At the time, ''Tinkerbelle'' was the shortest but not the smallest boat to make a non-stop trip across the Atlantic Ocean (till today the smallest is Lindemann's folding kayak). ''Tinkerbelle'' is a sailboat in which 47-year-old newspaperman Robert Manry, a copy editor at the Cleveland ''Plain Dealer'', single-handedly crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1965. At the time, it was the shortest but not the smallest boat to cross the Atlantic nonstop (till today the smallest is Lindemann's folding kayak). He left Falmouth, Massachusetts on June 1 and arrived in Falmouth, Cornwall, England 78 days later, greeted by an armada of small boats and a huge crowd. Mayor Samuel A. Hooper of Falmouth officially welcomed him at the town's Custom House Quay. Hull Speed
Hull speed or displacement speed is the speed at which the wavelength of a vessel's bow wave is equal to the waterline length of the vessel. As boat speed increases from rest, the wavelength of the bow wave increases, and usually its crest-to-trough dimension (height) increases as well. When hull speed is exceeded, a vessel in displacement mode will appear to be climbing up the back of its bow wave. From a technical perspective, at hull speed the bow and stern waves interfere constructively, creating relatively large waves, and thus a relatively large value of wave drag. Ship drag for a displacement hull increases smoothly with speed as hull speed is approached and exceeded, often with no noticeable inflection at hull speed. A tiller or till is a lever used to steer a vehicle. The mechanism is primarily used in watercraft, where it is attached to an outboard motor, rudder post or stock to provide leverage in the form of torque for the helmsman to turn the rudder. Transom (nautical)
A transom is the vertical reinforcement which strengthens the stern of a boat. This flat termination of the stern is typically above the waterline. The term was used as far back as Middle English in the 1300s, having come from Latin ''transversus'' (transverse) via Old French ''traversain'' (set crosswise). The stern of a boat is typically vertical. It can be raked such that there is an overhang above the water, as at the bow. A reverse transom is angled from the waterline forwards.
