Cummins Falls State Park is a state park located northwest of Cookeville in Jackson County in the U.S. state of Tennessee. Its namesake, Cummins Falls, is a waterfall, which is located on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River. The park was purchased and created by the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation in 2011. Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The population was 11,638 at the 2010 census. Its county seat is Gainesboro. Jackson is part of the Cookeville Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Jackson County was created by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly on November 6, 1801. It was the 18th county established in the state. It was formed from part of Smith County plus Indian lands. The name honors Andrew Jackson, who by 1801 had already served as a U.S. Congressman and Senator from Tennessee, a Tennessee Supreme Court justice, and a colonel in the Tennessee militia. He became more widely known as commander at the Battle of New Orleans and as the seventh President of the United States. Cummins Falls is a waterfall on the Blackburn Fork River and is located in southern Jackson County, Tennessee. By volume, it is the eighth largest waterfall in Tennessee. The falls, with a total height of seventy-five feet, consist of two drops. The first has a plunge drop of fifty feet, ending in a shallow pool. The second has a cascade drop of twenty-five feet into a larger, deeper pool, or " swimming hole". In 2010, Cummins Falls was named "Tenth Best Swimming Hole in America" by ''Travel + Leisure'' magazine. Blackburn Fork State Scenic River
Blackburn Fork River is a river located in Jackson County, Tennessee. It originates near Cookeville, Tennessee, and is a major tributary of the Roaring River. It contains the seventy-five foot high waterfall, Cummins Falls, and runs within Cummins Falls State Park. Hiking, swimming, and fishing are popular activities on the river. TennGreen Land Conservancy, formerly the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation, is a non-profit land trust, established in 1998 to protect natural and scenic land in Tennessee. It is accredited by the Land Trust Alliance's Land Trust Accreditation Commission. The foundation is supported by membership donations, individual philanthropy, and gifts of land from private landowners. The foundation's mission is to conserve natural monuments such as waterfalls, bluffs and caves. The park is situated around a steep gorge in which the Falling Water River drops in elevation in less than a mile, culminating in a cataract waterfall.
