Albert Baird Cummins
Albert Baird Cummins (February 15, 1850July 30, 1926) was an American lawyer and politician. He was the 18th governor of Iowa, elected to three consecutive terms and U.S. senator for Iowa, serving for 18 years. Cummins was a leader of the Progressive movement in Washington and Iowa. He fought to break up monopolies. Cummins' successes included establishing the direct primary to allow voters to select candidates instead of bosses; outlawing free railroad passes for politicians; imposing a two-cent street railway maximum fare; and abolishing corporate campaign contributions. He tried, with less success, to lower the high protective tariff in Washington. Jeanine Cummins (born December 6, 1974) is an American author, of Irish and Puerto Rican heritage. She has written four books: a memoir titled ''A Rip in Heaven'' and three novels, ''The Outside Boy,'' ''The Crooked Branch'', and ''American Dirt.'' Biography Cummins was born in Rota, Spain, where her father, Gene, was stationed as a member of the US Navy. Her mother, Kay, was a nurse. Maria Susanna Cummins (April 9, 1827 – October 1, 1866) was an American novelist. She was the author of the widely popular novel ''The Lamplighter''. Biography Maria Susanna Cummins was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on April 9, 1827. She was the daughter of Honorable David Cummins and Maria F. Kittredge, and was the eldest of four children from that marriage. The Cummins family resided in the neighborhood of Dorchester in Boston, Massachusetts. Cummins' father encouraged her to become a writer at an early age. She studied at Mrs. Charles Sedgwick's Young Ladies School in Lenox, Massachusetts. In 1854, she published the novel ''The Lamplighter'', a sentimental book which was widely popular and which made its author well-known. Light Townsend Cummins (born April 23, 1946) is an American educator and historian. He was the Bryan Professor of History at Austin College in Sherman, Texas prior to his retirement in 2018 and was the official State Historian of Texas from May 2009 to July 2012. Education Cummins grew up in San Antonio, Texas, attending the San Antonio Academy, Alamo Heights High School, and TMI — The Episcopal School of Texas. He holds a bachelor's and master's degree from Texas State University–San Marcos. He earned a PhD in history from Tulane University. Captain Kenneth Alfred Hugo Cummins (6 March 1900 – 10 December 2006) was, at age 106, one of the last surviving British veterans of the First World War. He served in the Royal Naval Reserve in the First World War as a (Temporary) Midshipman (15 July 1918 – 18 January 1919), and then in the Merchant Navy in the Second World War. Kenneth Cummins was born in Richmond, London. His father was an officer in the Merchant Navy. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby, and was a member of the school's Officers' Training Corps when the Great War broke out. He joined P&O as a naval cadet aged 15. John Martin Cummins (born March 12, 1942) is a Canadian politician. He was the leader of the British Columbia Conservative Party from 2011 until resigning after the 2013 election. He was the Conservative Member of Parliament for the riding of Delta—Richmond East in British Columbia from 1993 until 2011, when he turned to provincial politics becoming the leader of the unaffiliated provincial party. Born in Georgetown, Ontario, he was first elected to the House of Commons in the 1993 election, as a Reform Party member. John Cummins (1948 – 29 August 2006) was an Australian labour leader. From 1972 onwards, Cummins was involved with the Australian Building Construction Employees and Builders Labourers Federation The Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) was an Australian trade union that existed from 1911 until 1972, and from 1976 until 1986, when it was permanently deregistered in various Australian states by the federal Hawke Labor government and some ..., better known as the B.L.F. He was the last Victorian secretary of the BLF, and then became the Federal President of the new "super-union", the CFMEU. ( Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union).
