Willie Martinez (born March 3, 1971) is a jockey in North American Thoroughbred horse racing. Martinez is known in the business as "Chillie Willie," because of his "chill" demeanor in riding. Background Martinez was born in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico, but emigrated to the United States in 1988 to work as a hotwalker and groom for his sister's godfather at Finger Lakes Race Track in Farmington, New York. Riding career Mrtinez began riding professionally in 1989 and got his first win that year at Tampa Bay Downs. In 1997, at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, he rode Cryptocloser to victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes, the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown series. Awesome Again (March 29, 1994December 15, 2020) was a Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse and stallion. As a three-year-old, he won the Queen's Plate in Canada and the Jim Dandy Stakes in the United States. He was undefeated at age four, scoring his biggest win in the Breeders' Cup Classic after winning the Stephen Foster Handicap, Saratoga Breeders' Cup Handicap, Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap and Whitney Handicap. He was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2001. At stud, he was an important sire whose offspring include Ghostzapper, an American Horse of the Year. Cryptoclearance (April 9, 1984 in Kentucky – September 24, 2009) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Florida Derby in 1987 and the Hawthorne Gold Cup in 1988 and 1999. Racing career Trained by future Hall of Fame trainer Scotty Schulhofer, Cryptoclearance raced for three years, winning 12 of his 44 starts including four Grade 1 races. In 1987, Cryptoclearance won the Florida Derby before coming fourth in the Kentucky Derby to Alysheba, third in the Preakness Stakes to Alysheba, and second in the Belmont Stakes to Bet Twice. Prince Of Wales Stakes
The Prince of Wales Stakes is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Fort Erie Race Track in Fort Erie, Ontario. Restricted to only three-year-old horses bred in Canada, it is contested on dirt over a distance of miles (1.9 km; furlongs). In 1959, the Prince of Wales Stakes became the second race in the Canadian Triple Crown series. It follows the June running of the King's Plate and precedes the Breeders' Stakes in August. The race was inaugurated in 1929 at the now defunct Thorncliffe Park Raceway in today's Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood of central east Toronto. Historical notes In 1959, the E.P. Vice Regent
Vice Regent (April 29, 1967 – June 18, 1995) was a Canadian Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse and Canada's leading sire for thirteen years. Owned and bred by E. P. Taylor, he was from Northern Dancer's second crop and out of the mare Victoria Regina, a daughter of the French multiple stakes winner Menetrier whom E. P. Taylor purchased as a sire from François Dupré and imported to Canada. Vice Regent was a full brother to Viceregal who earned Canadian Horse of the Year honours as a two-year-old in 1968. As such, on his debut one year later in 1969, much was expected from Vice Regent. Conditioned by future Hall of Fame trainer Gordon J. McCann, as a result of injuries and an accident, Vice Regent raced only five times before being forced into retirement. Mark Frostad
Mark R. Frostad (born January 19, 1949) is a Canadian thoroughbred horse trainer. Born in Brantford, Ontario, he grew up with a father who owned a stud farm but before becoming involved in thoroughbred horse racing, Frostad obtained a BA degree in literature from Princeton University then in 1976 an MBA degree from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario,. In 1991 he became actively involved in racing as a thoroughbred trainer, meeting with great success in the employ of Sam-Son Farm whom he joined in 1995. Among his more than 100 stakes race victories, he won Canada's most prestigious horse race, the Queen's Plate, in 1996, 2000, 2001 and 2009 and both the Canadian International Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Turf in 1997.
