Crotta O'Neill's are a hurling club in the Kilflynn area of County Kerry, Ireland. The club is named after Maurice O'Neill, an Irish Republican. They play in the Kerry Senior Hurling Championship. The club is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. Their pitch is located in Dromakee. History The Club have played in 19 Kerry Senior Hurling Championship finals winning 10, including a three in a row from 1943 to 1945 and a two in a row in 1950 and 1951. The most successful time for the club came between 1939 and 1951 when the club won 8 of their 10 County Championships. Jimmy Flaherty was captain for 5 for the wins in 1939, 1944, 1945, 1947 and 1950. Following their win in 1968 the club did not go on to win another Kerry Senior Hurling Championship for 55 years, losing 7 finals. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Kilflynn
Kilflynn () is a village and a civil parish in north County Kerry, Ireland. It is 11 km north-east of Tralee just off the N69 road from Tralee to Listowel. Etymology The origin of the place name Cill Flainn is unknown. Two suggestions are commonly circulated. ‘Cill’ in Irish can mean 'cell' or 'churchyard' so in context might mean 'church of Flainn.' A popularised tale is that it was named after a Roman Catholic hermit monk, Flainn, said to have lived by the River Shannow (which runs through Kilflynn). Crippled and blind, he was visited by the Virgin Mary, who offered to restore his ailing sight. Flainn declined, asking for the miraculous power to be transferred to others via a local well (now Tobar Flainn, well or spring of Flainn). Maurice O'Neill (Irish Republican)
Maurice O'Neill was an Irish Republican Army (IRA) volunteer, captured in 1942 after a shoot out with Irish police, and promptly tried and executed, one of only two people executed in independent Ireland for a non-murder offence. Background O'Neill was from an Irish republican family in the farming community of Caherciveen, County Kerry. He and his older brother Sean were dedicated Irish republicans. Maurice O'Neill fought in the Irish Republican Army's 1942-44 Northern Campaign and was assigned to the IRA's General Headquarters (GHQ) at the time of his capture. In the early 1930s, O'Neills brother Sean served in the IRAs Dublin Brigade and served on GHQ Staff IRA in various capacities from 1945 to 1955. Kerry Senior Hurling Championship
The Kerry Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Kerry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1889 for the top hurling teams in the county of Kerry in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer months, with the county final currently being played in Austin Stack Park in August. Initially played a knock-out competition, the championship currently uses a double elimination format whereby each team is guaranteed at least two games. The 2020 championship reverted to a straight knock-out format due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Kerry County Championship is an integral part of the wider Munster Intermediate Club Hurling Championship. 2023 Kerry Senior Hurling Championship
The 2023 Kerry Senior Hurling Championship was the 122nd staging of the Kerry Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Kerry County Board in 1889. The draw for the group stage pairings took place on 31 May 2023. The championship ran from 16 June to 6 August 2023. Causeway entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were beaten by Crotta O'Neill's at the quarter-final stage. The final was played on 6 August 2023 at Austin Stack Park in Tralee, between Crotta O'Neill's and Lixnaw, in what was their third meeting in the final overall and a first final meeting in 24 years. Dick Spring
Dick Spring (born 29 August 1950) is an Irish businessman and former politician. He was a Labour Party Teachta Dála (TD) for the Kerry North from 1981 to 2002. He became leader of the Labour Party in 1982, and held this position until 1997. He served as Minister for the Environment (1982–83), Minister for Energy (1983–87) and Minister for Foreign Affairs (1993–Nov. 1994, Dec. 1994–97). He served as Tánaiste during those three governments. Prior to his political career Spring was a successful sportsman who played for the Ireland national rugby union team and the Kerry GAA football and hurling teams. Todd Nolan
Todd Nolan was a hurler from County Kerry. He played with the Kerry intercounty team from 1966 to 1986, and with his local Crotta O'Neill's club. He also played football with Fingue. While playing for Kerry, he won three All-Ireland Senior B Hurling Championship titles in 1976, 1983 and 1986. He won a Railway Cup medal with Munster in 1969 alongside the great names of hurling like Len Gaynor, Eamonn Cregan and Jimmy Doyle to name a few. At club level with Crotta O'Neill's he won a Kerry Senior Hurling Championship medal in 1968 to date the last title Crotta have won. He also played in 5 other finals. His father Tom Nolan was also a great hurling during the 1940s till the 1960s. He had 4 other brothers who also played with Kerry. Shane Nolan
Shane Nolan is a hurler from County Kerry. He has played with the Kerry intercounty team and with his local Crotta O'Neill's club. Club At club level Nolan plays with Crotta O'Neill's. He won the County League Div 1 title in 2010 beating County Championships Ballyduff in the final. In 2011 he helped Crotta O'Neill's to their first County Championship final in 12 years. Despite scoring 0-13 of his sides 0-15 and picking up the Man of the Match award Crotta ended up the wrong side of a 2–11 to 0–15 scoreline.
