Cook County is the easternmost County (United States), county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Gunflint Lodge
Gunflint Lodge is one of the oldest and the best known lodges on the Gunflint Trail in Minnesota, United States. It is located on Gunflint Lake, on the border of Ontario, Canada, and is open year-round. Built in 1925 by Dora Blankenburg and her son Russell Blankenburg, the lodge was sold in 1927 to May and Justine Spunner, and was owned by them till it was sold by Bruce Kerfoot in 2016.The family name changed in 1934 when Justine married Bill Kerfoot and her name became Justine Kerfoot. After Justine retired in the mid-80s, the lodge was run by her son Bruce and his second wife Sue Kerfoot. They handed operations over to a son, Lee in 2001 through 2008. The Kerfoots announced their intentions to sell the lodge in 2013 and sold it in 2016. Some of the most popular activities at the lodge are fishing and hiking, and in the winter, dogsledding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. County State-Aid Highway 12 (CSAH 12), also known as the Gunflint Trail, or County Road 12 (CR 12), is a paved roadway and National Scenic Byway in Cook County, Minnesota, that begins in Grand Marais and ends at Saganaga Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), near the U.S. border with Ontario. It provides access to many of the entry points in the BWCAW. Route description Originally a footpath for travelers from inland lakes to Lake Superior, the trail was eventually widened into a roadway, and designated as County Road 12 (CR 12). Gunflint Range
The Gunflint Range is an iron ore deposit in northern Minnesota in the United States and Northwestern Ontario, Canada. The range extends from the extreme northern portion of Cook County, Minnesota into the Thunder Bay District, Ontario. The Gunflint Iron Formation is a continuation of the Mesabi Range to the southwest. The two have been separated by the intrusion of the Duluth Gabbro complex. The iron deposit is a banded iron formation of the Early Proterozoic Animikie Group. The Gunflint Iron Formation is overlain by "brecciated and complexly deformed iron formations", which in turn is overlain by ejecta from the " Sudbury meteorite impact event." This Sudbury Impact Layer is overlain by the Rove Formation. Stromatolite structures are evident within the Gunflint Iron Formation.
