Anne Crofton, 1st Baroness Crofton
Anne Crofton, 1st Baroness Crofton (11 January 1751 – 12 August 1817) was an Irish ''suo jure'' peeress. Biography Anne Crofton (née Croker) was the daughter of Thomas Croker of Blackwater, County Kildare and Anne Ryves, daughter and co-heiress of William Ryves of Upper Wood, County Kilkenny. William was a descendant of Sir William Ryves of Damory Court, Dorset who settled in Ireland about 1620 and became a judge of the Court of King's Bench (Ireland). Crofton was the wife of Sir Edward Crofton, 2nd Baronet, Member of the Irish Parliament for Roscommon. Sir Edward had been offered a peerage shortly before his death on 30 September 1797. The honour was instead bestowed on his widow Anne, Lady Crofton, who on 1 December 1797 was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baroness Crofton. Eileen Crofton
Lady Eileen Crofton, (28 March 1919 – 8 October 2010) was a British physician and author. She was best known for her anti-smoking campaigns. Early life and education Crofton was born on 28 March 1919 in Liverpool. Her father was an electrical engineer. She attended North London Collegiate School and Somerville College in Oxford. She qualified as a doctor in 1943. Career In 1944, Crofton joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. She was made a captain and posted in County Down in Northern Ireland where she met her husband, John Crofton. Between 1946 and 1949, Crofton worked at Brompton Hospital in London as a part-time clinical assistant. In 1952, the family moved to Edinburgh when John Crofton became professor of tuberculosis and lung disease at the University of Edinburgh. In 1962, Crofton became a research assistant in medical epidemiology and in 1963 she became the county medical officer for the Midlothian branch of the British Red Cross Society. John Crofton
Sir John Wenman Crofton (27 March 1912 – 3 November 2009) was a pioneer in the treatment of tuberculosis, who also spent the better part of his life raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco. Early life and family Crofton was born in Dublin, Ireland to a well-off Anglo-Irish family. His father was physician William Mervyn Crofton, who conducted medical research at the Royal University in Dublin, wrote books on endocrinology and virology, and had flourishing private medical practices both in Dublin and London. His mother was Mary Josephine Abbott, known as Molly. Crofton was sent to prep school at Baymount, in the suburbs of Dublin away from "The Troubles", and then in 1925 to Tonbridge School in Kent. Kathleen Crofton
Kathleen Crofton (1902 – 30 November 1979) was an English dancer, dance director and dance teacher. She was founder of the Niagara Frontier Ballet and the Ballet Center of Buffalo. Life and career Kathleen Crofton was born in Faizabad, India, in 1902, to British parents. Her father had been an Army Officer who was killed in action. Crofton studied ballet under Russian dancers Olga Preobrajenska, Nikolai Legat, and Laurent Novikoff. She would go on to dance with Anna Pavlova's company between 1923 and 1928, earning the nickname "Pavlova’s Baby" due to her age. Crofton then danced with the Chicago Lyric Opera Ballet before touring Europe with Bronislava Nijinska's company. She also danced with the Levitov-Dandré Russian Ballet and the Markova-Dolin Ballet. Morgan Crofton
Morgan Crofton (1826, Dublin, Ireland – 1915, Brighton, England) was an Irish mathematician who contributed to the field of geometric probability theory. He also worked with James Joseph Sylvester and contributed an article on probability to the 9th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. Crofton's formula is named in his honour. Early life Morgan Crofton was born into a wealthy Anglo-Irish family. His father, the Reverend William Crofton, Rector of Skreene, Co Sligo, was the younger brother of Sir Malby Crofton, 2nd Baronet of Longford House. Walter Crofton
Sir Walter Frederick Crofton (1815–1897) was chair of the Board of Directors of Convict Prisons for Ireland between 1854 and 1862. He is sometimes cited as Alexander Maconochie's ideological heir. Under Crofton's system of prison administration, known as the Irish system, prisoners progressed through three stages of confinement. During the first stage, the penal stage, prisoners were held in solitary cells for approximately nine months. The second stage involved communal labor in public works prisons. For the third stage, officials promoted prisoners in small numbers to "intermediate" prisons (essentially a halfway house, where they could run errands and attend church in the community) as a final test of their readiness for Irish tickets of leave.
