Croatian Hip Hop
Croatian hip hop is a genre of music, and a culture that covers a variety of styles of hip hop music made in Croatia. Croatian hip hop was originally influenced by the American hip hop scene and introduced to Croatia in the mid-1990s. Croatian hip hop, particularly that originating from Rijeka and Zagreb in the 1990s, was mainly concentrated on social issues due to the corruptive system of government at the time. In the 2000s, Croatian hip hop started becoming more mainstream and it spread to Split developing its own hip hop style. Origins During the 1980s in Croatia and Yugoslavia, there was a mainstream surge of rock music called new wave which mostly suppressed other types of music from the mainstream. Electro-pop bands like Denis & Denis and funk musicians such as Dino Dvornik were unique at the time. Ugly Leaders
Ugly Leaders was a Croatian hip hop group from Rijeka. They were the first Rapping, rappers to release a hip hop album in Croatia as well as one of the first hip hop acts in the Balkans. History The group was formed in 1988 by childhood friends David Jambreušić, Richard Lenac and Sadin Kruškić who took on the aliases DJ Pimp Tha Ho, DJ R-33 Rock and MC Condom X. They started recording their first material at the end of 1989 in a small studio in Opatija with the help of their former manager Damn Jay, but dissatisfied with the quality of the songs they moved into a better studio, where in 1991 they recorded material for the first Croatian hip-hop album Channel is Deep & Beech. MC Buffalo
Dejan Bubalo (born June 6, 1971) known better by his stage name, MC Buffalo, was a Croatian rapper. Early life and career Dejan Bubalo was born on June 17, 1971, in Rijeka, SFR Yugoslavia. He grew up in the suburb of Zamet. Dejan started rapping in the mid 80's while in high school. In 1985 he joined a band called R.A.P. where he was the vocalist. Dejan rapped all over the streets of Rijeka. He got his stage name in 1989 when an American soldier could not pronounce his last name Bubalo and called him to Buffalo. In 1991 Buffalo got acquainted with local producer Denis Pilepić, the two became great friend and started working together. In the spring of 1991 MC Buffalo released through D.J-Team Pilepićes label his debut solo album MC Buffalo's 1st Cut. The album was released on cassette tape. Dino Dvornik (; 20 August 1964 – 7 September 2008) was a Croatian singer-songwriter, music producer, actor and reality television star known as "the Croatian king of funk". Biography Early life A son of renowned actor Boris Dvornik and mother Diana Dvornik (née Tomić), Dino was born in Split, at that time within Yugoslav republic of Croatia. He and his elder brother Dean would play alongside their father in mainstream 1970s movies and TV shows in Yugoslavia. Funk
Funk is a music genre that originated in African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African Americans in the mid-20th century. It de-emphasizes melody and chord progressions and focuses on a strong rhythmic groove of a bassline played by an electric bassist and a drum part played by a percussionist, often at slower tempos than other popular music. Denis & Denis was a Croatian and Yugoslav synth-pop group formed in Rijeka in 1982. They were one of the most popular acts of the Yugoslav synth-pop scene. Formed as a duo consisting of keyboardist and vocalist Davor Tolja and vocalist Marina Perazić, Denis & Denis immediately gained attention of the Yugoslav audience with their first recordings broadcast on Yugoslav radio stations. Their debut album, ''Čuvaj se!'', released in 1984, brought them nationwide popularity, Perazić becoming one of the biggest sex symbols of the Yugoslav rock scene. New wave in Yugoslavia ( sr-Cyrl-Latn, Нови талас, Novi talas; hr, Novi val; sl, Novi val; mk, Нов бран) was the new wave music scene of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. As its counterparts, the British and the American new wave, from which the main influences came, the Yugoslav scene was also closely related to punk rock, ska, reggae, 2 Tone, power pop and mod revival. Some of its acts are also counted as belonging to the Yugoslav punk scene which already existed prior to new wave.
