Crew Dragon Freedom
Crew Dragon ''Freedom'' (Dragon capsule C212) is a SpaceX_Dragon_2#Crew_Dragon, Crew Dragon spacecraft manufactured and operated by SpaceX and used by NASA's Commercial Crew Program. On 27 April 2022, it was launched to transport four personnel to the International Space Station as part of the SpaceX Crew-4 mission, which was a part of ISS Expedition 67. History On 23 March 2022, it was announced that Dragon C212 will be called ''Freedom''. Astronaut Kjell Lindgren said that the name was chosen because it celebrates a fundamental human right, and the industry and innovation that emanate from the unencumbered human spirit. The name also honors ''Mercury-Redstone 3, Freedom 7'', the space capsule used by Alan Shepard's Mercury Redstone 3, the first United States human spaceflight mission (May 5, 1961). Space Capsule
A space capsule is an often-crewed spacecraft that uses a blunt-body reentry capsule to reenter the Earth's atmosphere without wings. Capsules are distinguished from other satellites primarily by the ability to survive reentry and return a payload to the Earth's surface from orbit. Capsule-based crewed spacecraft such as Soyuz or Orion are often supported by a service or adapter module, and sometimes augmented with an extra module for extended space operations. Capsules make up the majority of crewed spacecraft designs, although one crewed spaceplane, the Space Shuttle, has flown in orbit. Mercury Redstone 3
Mercury-Redstone 3, or ''Freedom 7'', was the first United States human spaceflight, on May 5, 1961, piloted by astronaut Alan Shepard. It was the first crewed flight of Project Mercury. The project had the ultimate objective of putting an astronaut into orbit around the Earth and returning him safely. Shepard's mission was a 15-minute suborbital flight with the primary objective of demonstrating his ability to withstand the high g-forces of launch and atmospheric re-entry. Shepard named his space capsule ''Freedom 7'', setting a precedent for the remaining six Mercury astronauts naming their spacecraft. The number 7 was included in all the crewed Mercury spacecraft names to honor NASA's first group of seven astronauts. John Shoffner
John Shoffner (born July 25, 1955) is an American racing driver, investor, and pilot. In May 2021, he paid for a seat on Axiom Mission 2, the second entirely-private crew mission to the International Space Station. Shoffner served as the pilot of the Crew Dragon crew vehicle, which launched on May 21, 2023. Biography Shoffner was born in Fairbanks, Alaska. He spent most of his career in Knoxville, Tennessee. Before creating his own motorsports team J2-Racing in 2012, Shoffner was a businessman. He had a 21-year career with Kentucky-based telecommunications manufacturer Dura-Line. Peggy Annette Whitson (born February 9, 1960) is an American biochemistry researcher, retired NASA astronaut, and former NASA Chief Astronaut. Whitson has a total of 665 days in space, more than any other woman or American. Expedition 68
Expedition 68 is the 68th long-duration expedition to the International Space Station. The expedition began upon the departure of Soyuz MS-21 on 29 September 2022, with ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti taking over as ISS commander. Initially, the expedition consisted of Cristoforetti and her three SpaceX Crew-4 crewmates Kjell N. Robert Thomas Hines, Jr. (born January 11, 1975) is an American fighter pilot and NASA astronaut. Early life and education Robert "Farmer" Hines was born on January 11, 1975, in Fayetteville, North Carolina to Lynne and Robert Hines Sr. His family moved to Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, where he attended Crestwood High School.
