Cretan Derby
The Cretan derby ( el, Το Κρητικό Ντέρμπι), also called Heraklion Derby ( el, Ηρακλειώτικο ντέρμπι) or The Battle of Crete ( el, Η Μάχη της Κρήτης) is an association football rivalry between Ergotelis and OFI, the two teams that have represented the city of Heraklion, Crete in the Greek Super League. Although the term "Cretan derby" has been used to describe almost every match-up between football clubs from Crete on any level of the Greek football league system, the OFI-Ergotelis rivalry is the most iconic, since it involves the two most prestigious clubs on the island and its roots can be traced back to the early days of Greek professional football. Heraklion
Heraklion or Iraklion ( ; el, Ηράκλειο, , ) is the largest city and the administrative capital of the island of Crete and capital of Heraklion regional unit. It is the fourth largest city in Greece with a population of 211,370 (Urban Area) according to the 2011 census. The population of the municipality was 177,064. A football team is a group of players selected to play together in the various team sports known as football. Such teams could be selected to play in a match against an opposing team, to represent a football club, group, state or nation, an all-star team or even selected as a hypothetical team (such as a Dream Team or Team of the Century) and never play an actual match. The difference between a football team and a football club is incorporation, a football club is an entity which is formed and governed by a committee and has members which may consist of supporters in addition to players. Pankritio Stadium
The Pankritio Stadium ( el, Παγκρήτιο Στάδιο, ''Pagkritio Stadio'', literally: ''Pancretan Stadium'') is a multi-purpose sports stadium located in Heraklion on the island of Crete. It was completed on 31 December 2003, and officially opened on 11 August 2004. As one of the most modern sports venues in Greece at the time, it was used as one of the association football, football venues to host matches of the Football at the 2004 Summer Olympics, 2004 Summer Olympic football tournament. 2017–18 Football League (Greece)
The 2017–18 Football League is the second division of the Greek professional football league system and the seventh season under the name Football League after previously being known as ''Beta Ethniki''. It will start at 28 October, Teams * 1 Acharnaikos was expelled during the season :1. Agrotikos Asteras withdrew from the league. As a result of this they will participate in 2017–18 Gamma Ethniki. Gamma Ethniki
The Gamma Ethniki ( el, Γ΄ Εθνική Ερασιτεχνική Κατηγορία, C National Amateur Division) is the third highest football league in Greece. History The Gamma Ethniki began in 1965 as an amateur championship, while in 1983 it was changed to professional. Although not literally national (it is divided into ''North'' and ''South'' groups), Football League 2 is considered as a national division. On 3 August 2010, it was announced that the division had been renamed ''Football League 2''. Skai TV (Greek: ΣΚΑΪ) is a Greek free-to-air television network based in Piraeus. It is part of the Skai Group, one of the largest media groups in the country. It was relaunched in its present form on 1 April 2006 in the Athens metropolitan area, and gradually spread its coverage nationwide. Besides digital terrestrial transmission, it is available on the subscription-based encrypted services of Nova and Cosmote TV. Skai TV is also a member of Digea, a consortium of private television networks introducing digital terrestrial transmission in Greece. At launch, Skai TV opted for dubbing all foreign language content into Greek, instead of using subtitles. Balkans Cup
The Balkans Cup was an international football competition for clubs from Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Turkey, and Yugoslavia. It was introduced in 1961 and was very popular in the 1960s (the 1967 final attracted 42,000 spectators), being the second most important international club competition for clubs from the region (after the European Champions' Cup in which the champions could play; the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup originally attracted few teams from the region as many did not organise domestic cups regularly and only Yugoslavia had significant representation in the Fairs Cup). The competition has been dominated by Bulgaria-based teams. The Bulgarian teams have won together a total number of 9 titles.
