Crawford, Ohio
Crawford is an unincorporated community in Wyandot County, in the U.S. state of Ohio. History A post office was established at Crawford in 1838, and remained in operation until 1920. The community was named for William Crawford (1732–1782), a soldier in American Revolutionary War who was burnt at the stake by Indians nearby. See also *Col. Wyandot County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 21,900. Its county seat is Upper Sandusky. It was named for the Wyandot Indians, who lived here before and after European encounter. Their autonym is variously translated from their language as "around the plains" and "dwellers on the peninsula". The county was organized by the state legislature from parts of Crawford, Marion, Hardin and Hancock counties on February 3, 1845. William Crawford (soldier)
William Crawford (2 September 1732 – 11 June 1782) was an American soldier and surveyor who worked as a western land agent for George Washington. Crawford fought in the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. He was tortured and burned at the stake by American Indians in retaliation for the Gnadenhutten massacre, a notorious slaughter of Indians by militia near the end of the American Revolution. Early career Crawford was born on 2 September 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Before a 1995 genealogical study by Allen W. Scholl, his birth year was erroneously estimated to be 1732.
