Crataegus Pinnatifida
''Crataegus pinnatifida'', also known as mountain hawthorn, Chinese haw, Chinese hawthorn or Chinese hawberry, refers to a small to medium-sized tree, as well as the fruit of the tree. The fruit is bright red, in diameter. Use Culinary use In northern Chinese cuisine, ripe ''C. pinnatifida'' fruits are used in the desserts ''tanghulu'' and '' shanzhagao''. It is also used to make the traditional candies haw flakes and haw rolls, as well as candied fruit slices, jam, jelly, and wine. It is also traditionally used as a finishing ingredient in Cantonese sweet and sour sauce, although it has since been partially supplanted by ketchup. Traditional medicine In traditional Chinese medicine, the dried fruits of ''C. pinnatifida'' have been used as a digestive aid. Alexander Georg von Bunge (russian: Алекса́ндр Андре́евич Бу́нге; – ) was a Russian botanist. He is best remembered for scientific expeditions into Asia and especially Siberia. Early life and education Bunge was born under the name, Alexander Andreevič von Bunge on in Kyiv as second son of a family that belonged to the German minority in Tsarist Russia. HIs father, Andreas Theodor was a pharmacist who had emigrated from East Prussia to Russia with his grandfather in the 18th century and his mother, Elisabeth von Bunge, . They moved to Dorpat in 1815 after his father's death in 1814 and attended highschool from 1818 to 1821. He was educated at Dorpat and where he passed through the gymnasium during the period of 1821–1825. Then, he studied medicine and obtained his Doctorate of Medicine from University of Tartu on 1825. Korea National Arboretum () is an over-500-year-old arboretum located in Pocheon city of Gyeonggi Province of South Korea. It is widely known as "Gwangneung Forest ()" by the public. It is designated as UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves, World Network of Biosphere Reserve and the country's 11th Natural monuments of South Korea, natural monument. Tanghulu
Tanghulu () or ''Tang hulu'' (), also called ''bingtang hulu'' (), is a traditional Northern Chinese snack consisting of several rock sugar-coated fruits of Chinese hawthorn (''Crataegus pinnatifida'') on a bamboo skewer. It is named for its calabash-like shape. Tanghulu is often mistaken for regular candied fruits; however, it is coated in a hardened sugar syrup. This sweet and sour treat has been made since the Song Dynasty and remains popular throughout northern China. Chinese hawthorn is the traditional fruit used for the skewering of fruit, but in recent times vendors have also used various other fruits, such as cherry tomatoes, mandarin oranges, strawberries, blueberries, pineapples, kiwifruit, bananas, or grapes. Haw flakes () are Chinese sweets made from the fruit of the Chinese hawthorn. The pale/dark pink candy is usually formed into discs two millimeters thick, and packaged in cylindrical stacks with label art resemblant of Chinese fireworks. The sweet and tangy snack is usually served to guests along with tea or as a treat for children. Some Chinese people take the flakes with bitter Chinese herbal medicine. Variety Gourmet haw flakes are also available at specialty Chinese markets in the West.
