Craryville (NYCRR Station)
The Craryville station was a former New York Central Railroad station that served the residents of Copake, New York. It is currently located along New York State Route 23 in the hamlet of Craryville. History The New York and Harlem Railroad built their main line through Craryville between 1849 and 1852 leading to Chatham. It was also intended to be the original northern terminus of the Dutchess and Columbia Railroad. The station catered to a local community that had a substantial industry during the era of the NY&H, and later when the New York Central Railroad (NYCRR) acquired the railroad. The line provided both passenger and freight train services, and even included a high-level freight loading dock. However, with the demise of the Harlem Division passenger service on March 20, 1972, the station was closed for passengers and provided freight only services. New York State Route 23
New York State Route 23 (NY 23) is an east–west state highway in the eastern portion of New York in the United States. It extends for from an intersection with NY 26 in the Central New York town of Cincinnatus in Cortland County to the Massachusetts state line in the Berkshire Mountains, where it continues east as that state's Route 23. Along the way, it passes through many communities, including the cities of Norwich and Oneonta. Outside of the communities, the route serves largely rural areas of the state and traverses the Catskill Mountains in the state's Central New York Region. Harlem Valley Rail Trail
The Harlem Valley Rail Trail is a paved rail trail on an abandoned portion of the New York and Harlem Railroad, north of the hamlet of Wassaic and easily accessible by train, one mile north of the start at the Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line terminus in Wassaic. It is owned by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). It is maintained through an agreement between OPRHP, Dutchess County and the Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association, a private not-for-profit organization. The former New York and Harlem main line was acquired by the New York Central Railroad in 1864, and became part of the Penn Central Railroad in 1968. Wassaic is a hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, United States. Located in southeastern New York in the valley of the Ten Mile River, Wassaic is bordered to the east and west by mountain ranges. The name of the hamlet is derived from the Native American word ''Washaic''; "land of difficult access" or "narrow valley". New York And Harlem Railroad
The New York and Harlem Railroad (now the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line) was one of the first railroads in the United States, and was the world's first street railway. Designed by John Stephenson, it was opened in stages between 1832 and 1852 between Lower Manhattan to and beyond Harlem. Horses initially pulled railway carriages, followed by a conversion to steam engines, then on to battery-powered Julien electric traction cars. In 1907, the then leaseholders of the line, New York City Railway, a streetcar operator, went into receivership.
