Cozzene
Cozzene (May 8, 1980 – October 7, 2008) was an American Champion Thoroughbred racehorse and outstanding sire. He was bred and raced by U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee John A. Nerud and trained by his son, Jan. Cozzene began racing at age three, winning three of six starts. At age four he won three more races from ten starts and ran third in the Breeders' Cup Mile. In 1985, the then five-year-old Cozzene had his best year in racing with wins in won four of eight starts. The previous year, in the inaugural running of the Breeders' Cup Mile at Hollywood Park Racetrack, Cozzene had finished third but came back to win the November 2, 1985 edition at Aqueduct Racetrack . His 1985 performances earned him the 1985 Eclipse Award for American Champion Male Turf Horse. Star of Cozzene (foaled 1988 in Kentucky) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse who won on both dirt and turf. A descendant of Nearco through both his sire and his dam, he won the 1991 Kelso Handicap at New York's Belmont Park then with Pat Day riding and with a big late run from off the pace finished a fast-closing narrowly beaten third in the Breeders' Cup Mile behind Opening Verse. In 1992 his owners, Clover Racing Stables, sent him to trainer François Boutin to race in France and England. There, his best result in five starts was a second in the Group 3 Prix du Chemin de Fer du Nord at Chantilly Racecourse. Star of Cozzene returned to race in the United States in September 1992 where he raced once, finishing ninth in the Arlington Million. Environment Friend
Environment Friend (19 March 1988 – 28 February 2012) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for his win in the 1991 running of the Eclipse Stakes, one of the United Kingdom's most important weight-for-age races. After winning the second of his races as a two-year-old he established himself as a top-class colt with a five length win in the Dante Stakes in May 1991. He ran poorly in The Derby but then defeated a strong field to win the Eclipse as a 28/1 outsider. Environment Friend never won again, but remained in training until the age of seven, and was placed in several important races including the Coronation Cup (twice), the Champion Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes. Pivotal (horse)
Pivotal (19 January 1993 – 19 November 2021) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career restricted to six races between October 1995 and August 1996 he established himself as one of the leading sprinters in Europe. His most important wins came in the King's Stand Stakes and the Nunthorpe Stakes as a three-year-old in the summer of 1996. He was then retired to stud where he became an exceptionally successful breeding stallion. Background Pivotal was a chestnut horse bred and owned by the Cheveley Park Stud. He was the first foal sired by Polar Falcon, an American-bred horse who won the Lockinge Stakes and the Haydock Sprint Cup in England in 1991. Prince John (horse)
Prince John (April 6, 1953 – January 26, 1979) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse called "one of the greatest broodmare sires of all time" by Bloodhorse magazine. Bred in Kentucky, he was sired by Princequillo, a two-time leading sire in North America and a nine-time leading broodmare sire. He was out of the mare Not Afraid, a daughter of 1943 U.S. Triple Crown winner and Hall of Fame inductee Count Fleet. Prince John was a full brother to Brave Lad. On behalf of Max Gluck, a New York clothing retailer and owner of Elmendorf Farm, trainer Walter Kelley bought Prince John for $14,300 at the 1954 Keeneland Summer Sale from breeder Mrs. Fannie Hertz. American Champion Male Turf Horse
The American Champion Male Turf Horse award is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor. The award originated in 1953 when the ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) named Iceberg II their champion. The Thoroughbred Racing Association (TRA) added the category in 1967. The organisations disagreed only once, in 1968. In 1971 it became part of the Eclipse Awards program and is awarded annually to a Colt or Gelding, regardless of age, for their performance on grass race courses. The ''Daily Racing Form'', the Thoroughbred Racing Associations, and the National Turf Writers Association all joined forces in 1971 to create the Eclipse Award. From 1953 through 1978 it was awarded to male or female horses although the only female champion was Dahlia in 1974. In 1979 an individual category was created for each of the sexes. Breeders' Cup Mile
The Breeders' Cup Mile is a Grade 1 Weight for Age stakes race for thoroughbred racehorses three years old and up, run on a grass course. It has been conducted annually as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships since the event's inception in 1984. All Breeders' Cups to date have been held in the United States except for the 1996 event in Canada. The purse was raised from $1.5 million US to $2 million in 2007. Freddy Head has won this race twice as a jockey and three times as a trainer. There is no official stakes record for the Breeders' Cup Mile as it is run on different racecourses each year, some of which are significantly faster than others. In 2012, Wise Dan set a then-course record at Santa Anita with his time of 1:31.78. Caro (1967–1989) was an Irish-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Caro was a grey horse, standing . The Oceanport Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in early August at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. Open to horses age three and older, the Grade III event is contested on turf over a distance of miles(8.5 furlongs). Inaugurated in 1947 as a six furlong sprint race on dirt, it was switched to the turf course in 1964. The race was not run in 1996 due to Hurricane Bertha. Longfellow Stakes
The Longfellow Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run each year in early June at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. A six furlong sprint for either gender aged three and up, the ungraded Longfellow offers a purse of $70,000 and a trophy. The race, inaugurated in 1952, began as an eight furlong event. From 1963 to 1967 it went off at eight and a half furlongs. In 1968 it stretched out to nine furlongs and remained at that distance until 1996. In 1997, it became a six furlong race.
