Coventry Society
The Coventry Society is a voluntary body and is the civic society for the city of Coventry, England. It was founded in 1970, as the Coventry Civic Amenities Society, in opposition to the proposed demolition of Kirby House. The society is registered as a charity in England, number 500229, and is affiliated to Civic Voice Civic Voice is the national charity for the civic movement in England. Kirby House, Coventry
16 Little Park Street (also known as Kirby House) is a Georgian townhouse ( Grade II* listed) in central Coventry, West Midlands, England. It is one of two remaining Georgian buildings on the street and three in the city centre (the other two being 7 Little Park Street and 11 Priory Row). The name Kirby House comes from Thomas Hulston Kirby who bought it in 1874. , the building is occupied by the Citizens Advice Bureau. History The front of the house dates back to around 1735, but the façade may have been taken from an earlier building. The building received slight damage during the Coventry Blitz. Coventry City Council
Coventry City Council is the local government body responsible for the governance of the City of Coventry in England, which has been a metropolitan district since 1974. The city is divided up into 18 Wards each with three councillors. Coventry has usually been controlled by the Labour Party over the past few decades, and at times they appeared to be in safe control. However, the Conservatives held control for a short time in the 1970s, and they also held control from July 2004 until 2010. This article is about the history of Coventry, a city in the West Midlands, England. Coventry grew to become one of the most important cities in England during the Middle Ages due to its booming cloth and textiles trade. The city was noted for its part in the English Civil War, and later became an important industrial city during the 19th and 20th centuries, becoming the centre of the British bicycle and later motor industry. The devastating Blitz in 1940 destroyed much of the city centre, and saw its rebuilding during the 1950s and 60s. The motor industry slumped during the 1970s and 80s, and Coventry saw high unemployment. However, in the new millennium the city, along with many others saw significant urban renaissance and in 2017 it was announced that the city had been awarded the title of 2021 UK City of Culture.
