Route description Cumberland County CR 553 begins at an intersection with Hands Landing Road and Ogden Avenue in the residential community of Port Norris in Commercial Township, Cumberland County, heading west on two-lane undivided Main Street and intersecting CR 649. The route leaves Port Norris and heads northwest as Port Norris Road, heading into a mix of farms and woods as it reaches a junction with CR 725. Pittsgrove Township is a township in Salem County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 9,393, reflecting an increase of 500 (+5.6%) from the 8,893 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 772 (+9.5%) from the 8,121 counted in the 1990 Census. Pittsgrove Township was formed by Royal charter on December 6, 1769 and was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798, as one of the initial group of 104 townships established in New Jersey. Route 49 is a state highway in the southern part of the U.S. state of New Jersey. It runs from an interchange with the New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 295 (I-295), and U.S. Route 40 (US 40) in Deepwater, Salem County, southeast to Route 50 and County Route 557 in Tuckahoe, Cape May County. The Winchester and Western Railroad is a shortline railroad operating from Gore through Winchester, Virginia and West Virginia to Hagerstown, Maryland. It also operates several lines in southern New Jersey, connecting to Conrail Shared Assets Operations at Millville and Vineland. The highway extends from Port Norris Road ( CR 553) in Downe Township to Black Horse Pike ( Route 42) in Washington Township in Gloucester County. Route description CR 555 begins at an intersection with CR 553 in Downe Township, Cumberland County, heading northeast on two-lane undivided Church Street. The road heads northeast through woodland and marshy lakes, eventually turning north into dense forests.
