County Of Daly
The County of Daly is one of the 49 cadastral counties of South Australia. It was proclaimed in 1862 and named for Governor Dominick Daly. It covers the northern half of Yorke Peninsula stretching just east of the Hummock-Barunga Range in the west and just past the Broughton River in the north. Wallaroo Mines
Wallaroo Mines is a suburb of the inland town of Kadina on the Yorke Peninsula in the Copper Coast Council area. It was named for the land division in which it was established in 1860, the Hundred of Wallaroo, as was the nearby coastal town of Wallaroo. The boundaries were formally gazetted in January 1999 for "the long established name". History With the arrival of British pioneers in the late 1830s and 1840s, pastoralists began grazing livestock in the vicinity but no permanent settlements were formed. Development On 17 December 1859, James Boor, a shepherd on the Wallaroo sheep run, owned by Walter Watson Hughes, discovered copper at what was to become Wallaroo Mines. Thirty or forty men were reportedly working at the site by the end of the year. By August 1860, the new copper mines employed 150 men and were "turning out ores of a rich quality", and by the end of 1860 there was a total population of 500. Hummock Range
The Hummocks or Hummock Range is a range of hills in the northern Mount Lofty Ranges extending north from the eastern edge of Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. It is traversed by the Copper Coast Highway immediately west of where it passes around the northern end of Gulf St Vincent. The Augusta Highway passes to the east of the Hummocks. The Hummock Range includes the settlements of South Hummocks and Kulpara. Hundred Of Wokurna
The Hundred of Wokurna is a cadastral unit of hundred located in the Mid North of South Australia west of the Barunga Range. It is one of the 16 hundreds of the County of Daly and was proclaimed by Governor Anthony Musgrave on the last day of 1874. The hamlet of Wokurna lies near the south-eastern border of the hundred and locality bounds cover more than a quarter of the hundred. A large portion of Port Broughton occupies the hundred as well as small portions of Ward Hill and Mundoora. Local government The District Council of Broughton was established in 1888 by promulgation of the District Councils Act 1887, bringing the hundred under local administration for the first time. The council area included the Hundred of Wokurna as well as three adjacent hundreds. Redhill (formerly Broughton) is a town in the Mid North of South Australia adjacent to the Broughton River. Governance Redhill is in the Port Pirie Regional Council local government area, the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Frome and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Grey. History Redhill was established in the late nineteenth century under the name of ''Broughton'', with a hotel, blacksmith, general store and other businesses built within the township. A primary school operated in the town for many years. Several churches were also built in the township and there is also a cemetery on the town's south eastern outskirts. The Hundred of Redhill is a cadastral unit of hundred located in the Mid North of South Australia spanning the northern Barunga Range. It is one of the 16 hundreds of the County of Daly and was named in 1869 by Governor James Fergusson after the same hill giving rise to the name for the township of Redhill, uphill from the west bank of the Broughton River. The town of Redhill and the locality of Collinsfield are inside the Hundred of Redhill as well as the east half of Clements Gap and a north eastern portion of Mundoora. Port Broughton, South Australia
Port Broughton is a small South Australian town located at the northern extent of the Yorke Peninsula on the east coast of Spencer Gulf. It is situated about 170 km north-west of Adelaide, and 56 km south of Port Pirie. At the , the town of Port Broughton had a population of 1,034. The close proximity to Adelaide (two hours' drive) makes it a popular tourist destination, with the number of people in town swelling to over 4000 in the summer holidays. History The land around Port Broughton was initially used for grazing, however the local conditions were unsuitable and the land was divided up into acre lots and sold. Mundoora, South Australia
Mundoora is a settlement in South Australia, 16 km inland from Port Broughton, to which it was connected by the horse-drawn Port Broughton tramway around 1876. Its tram, dubbed "The Pie Cart", which was described as a "kind of second-hand coffin drawn by one horse" and still in operation in 1923 was later relegated to the Railways Museum and the line dismantled. At the 2006 census, Mundoora had a population of 248. Governance The first local government established in the area was the District Council of Broughton, later called District Council of Redhill. Mundoora was never served by the historic District Council of Mundoora, which was instead based at Port Broughton, to the west. Clements Gap, South Australia
Clements Gap is a locality in South Australia's Mid North. The name is a reference to the co-located pass through the north end of the Barunga Range. The Clements Gap pass in turn is thought to be named after a shepherd in the area prior to 1880, per research by local historian Rodney Cockburn. The Clements Gap school was opened in 1880 by John Wauchope and closed in 1942. Fisherman Bay, South Australia
Fisherman Bay is a coastal locality in South Australia, situated at the northern end of the Yorke Peninsula in the District Council of Barunga West. It has been owned by the Fisherman Bay Management Company since 1 March 1974 when the top 10 bidding residents formed the association. History Fisherman Bay consists of two unconnected areas on either side of the inlet to Fisherman Bay itself: a small residential area on the peninsula at the southern end, around the Fisherman Bay South Shack Site, immediately north of Port Broughton, and a larger, mostly uninhabited area to the north of the inlet. The village contains approximately 400 dwellings, with a shop and petrol station and community hall.
